Bouldering Burbage photos

Finally a little sun! Yesterday I went climbing in Burbage (specifically Burbage south boulders) in the Peak District near Sheffield. I’m really glad I’ve got these boulders within 15 minutes of my home.
Although in a climbing wall / gym I’m happy on 6a/6b the techniques on grit boulders are a different world: lots of smearing [...]

Court McGee comes back to submit Ryan Jensen at UFC 121

In his first bout since winning the 11th season of "The Ultimate Fighter," Court McGee won by submission over Ryan Jensen at UFC 121 in Anaheim, Calif. on Saturday.

Ryan Jensen started with a takedown and a knockdown of McGee, and continued to throw hard throughout the first round. He landed flush shots and wobbled McGee, though McGee was able to get one good strike through and bloody Jensen's nose.

Unfortunately for Jensen, he seemed to empty his gas tank in the first. The second round saw McGee come back stronger. He stuffed a Jensen takedown and began to close the distance with leg kicks. Jensen slowed down and was taken down by McGee near the end of the round.

McGee controlled the third, starting with a quick takedown then following it up with ground and pound. Jensen had no defense as McGee moved to full mount, rained down elbows and then trapped Jensen's arm for an arm triangle. Jensen tapped at 1:21 in the third.

SWELL in NYC (July 1st - Aug 6th)

Here's an interesting looking exhibition of "art inspired by surf and beach culture", opening July 1st at 3 locations in New York (gallery addresses on image below), involving COTW artists Ned Evans, Wolfgang Bloch, Jim Evans and Sandow Birk

Swell

Curated by Tim Nye and Jacqueline Miro. This survey of art inspired by surf and beach culture will open to the public on July 1st at the three locations in Chelsea and will include work by most members of the group of Venice Beach artists known as Light and Space and Finish Fetish.

The show historically contextualizes beach culture and its poetic and freeing nature on the Beat Generation, Assemblage, Light and Space, Finish Fetish, and early Pop Art. From this group of California artists, works by Wallace Berman, George Herms, Bruce Conner, Llyn Foulkes, Ed Kienholz, Billy Al Bengston, Tony Berlant, Ed Ruscha, Laddie John Dill, Dewain Valentine, Peter Alexander, John McCracken, Larry Bell, Craig Kauffman, and Helen Pashgian will be on view.

One of the main axes of the show is the obvious yet sensual relationship between Shapers and the Finish Fetish movement of the 60's. As the show focuses on two cities, L.A. and New York, it attempts to place the Ocean and its proximity to both cities as an antidote to a cacophony of quantities, speed and competing images. It also addresses how later generations of artists have looked back at assemblage, ephemera and graffiti as a way to either incorporate or reject the piercing presence of branding, advertisement, and information technology.

SWELL is a state of mind, but it is also our way of understanding distant forces, the beyond.

WEC roster added to the UFC: Top 10 fighters to watch

The little guys from WEC are on the way to the UFC. It gives Zuffa more ready-made stars to plug into the lineup on pay-per-view cards. With the influx of 135-155 pounders, there are a ton of action fights on the horizon. If you haven’t watched much Versus and WEC, here are the top 10 players moving over to the big show.

1. Jose Aldo, featherweight - The 24-year-old, the 145-pound champ has already exploded into the top 10 pound-for-pound. He’s 8-0 with the promotion and has won 11 straight overall. With Aldo on board with the UFC, he also has the flexibility to move up to 155 pounds. The only question on Aldo remains his ability to defend the takedown against top level wrestlers. He hasn’t met that type of fighter yet.

2. Urijah Faber, bantamweight - The guy who carried the WEC for years finally gets the exposure he deserves. The 5-foot-5 Faber is down where he belongs at 135 and with a media savvy/friendly personality plus matinee idol looks he could become a star on the same level as Georges St, Pierre or Brock Lesnar.

3. Miguel Torres, bantamweight - Truly the most well-rounded fighter in the WEC, the timing is perfect for Torres. Casual MMA fans will love his personality and his warrior style in the cage. He’s also working toward becoming a smarter fighter and playing more to his strengths on the ground.

4. Anthony Pettis, lightweight - His title shot on Dec. 16 against Ben Henderson just went from big to enormous. If Pettis pulls the mild upset and takes the title, he’ll get an immediate shot at the UFC lightweight title against Frank Edgar or Gray Maynard. Pettis, 23, is a big 155-pounder and can do it all.

5. Dominick Cruz, bantamweight - He’s a riddle yet to be solved down at 135. Another young fighter at 25-years-old, Cruz’s herky, jerky striking style is reminiscent of great defensive boxers of the past. The list of contenders and big fights at bantamweight in the UFC could easily headline PPV cards for a few years before any new fighters move into the mix.

6. Joe Benavidez, bantamweight - Benavidez may be the best action fighter in the sport and should be a candidate for the much bigger fight of the night bonuses available on UFC cards. He had match up issues against Cruz’s style but he’ll be a candidate for the 135 title again in the future. He may also provide some headaches for UFC matchmakers. If Faber can get the bantamweight title and is dominant, his teammate Benavidez still won’t take the fight.

7. Brian Bowles, bantamweight - The former 135 champ is the forgotten man but that’s a mistake. He brings one thing the rest of the bigger names in the weight class don’t - one punch knockout power. Bowles could be in line for some nice paydays as he works his way back from issues with his hands.

8. Ben Henderson, lightweight - Overrated or underrated, now Henderson, 26, will be put to the test. He has some of the best cardio in the division but now he’s stepping into the world of guys like Edgar, Maynard, Sean Sherk, Evan Dunham, Kenny Florian, George Sotiropolous and possibly Diego Sanchez. The USA Today/Bloody Elbow rankings only has Henderson ranked No. 14 in the world. That’s some serious motivation.

9. Josh Grispi, featherweight - The New Englander is on the verge of breaking out. The 22-year-old just needs to be a little more active. At just over 6-foot tall, he's a rangy guy for the weight class.

10. Donald Cerrone, lightweight
- Think of him as the 155-pound Chris Lytle. Cerrone may be no better than a .500 fighter in the UFC but he’ll bring it every time out. If he cuts down on his willingness to fight from his back, Cerrone has a chance to pull some big upsets. He’s also adds another crazy guy to the UFC roster when it comes to hyping a fight.

Who else are you excited to see on the big shows?

Slow Down Expectations for Jose Aldo, Jon Jones

by Michael David SmithUrijah Faber, Jose AldoThe two hottest young fighters in MMA are the 24-year-old WEC featherweight champion Jose Aldo and the 23-year-old UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones. UFC President Dana White knows that, but he also wants fans to know that Aldo won't be rushed into fighting as a UFC lightweight until he wants to, and Jones won't be rushed into a light heavyweight title fight before he's ready.

And so if you're hoping to see Aldo in the Octagon or Jones fighting for a belt, don't hold your breath.

White said on The Fight Fix on CSN Washington that Aldo had a chance to move into the UFC lightweight division and fight Kenny Florian, but Aldo chose instead to keep defending his featherweight belt. And he said Jones won't fight for the light heavyweight title for at least a year.

WEC to merge with UFC; fighters surprised and happy

As was first reported by MMA Fighting, the UFC and the WEC will merge in January 2011. The WEC will have its two scheduled events, Urijah Faber vs. Takeya Mizugaki in Las Vegas on Nov. 11 and Ben Henderson vs. Anthony Pettis in Arizona on Dec. 16. After that, the fighters will be rolled into the UFC.

Henderson, the WEC lightweight champion, texted with Cagewriter after the news broke. He gave a simple reaction: :-). He couldn't be happier about the news that not only will the UFC and WEC merge, but that the winner of his bout with Pettis will fight the winner of Gray Maynard vs. Frankie Edgar for the UFC lightweight belt.

"I'm very excited. Now the major goal is to go over there wearing a belt," Henderson said. "To be the best and make that claim, you've gotta beat the best. I want to take that one step further and beat not only the best, but everyone so there's no doubt."

His opponent on Dec. 16, Anthony Pettis, is just as excited about the merger.

"When I heard about it, I was finishing up my morning training session, and I wanted to go right back to the gym and train," Pettis told Cagewriter. "My fight with Ben was big enough, and now I'm two fights away from being the UFC champion. It's two championships in two fights."

He said he will always be grateful for his beginnings with the WEC.

"I look at it like college, and now I'm going to the NBA, and it just so happens that I'm the first-round draft pick. The UFC is where I want to be."

Henderson and Pettis both said they had no idea that the merger was coming, which was echoed by other fighters. Cagewriter broke the news to bantamweight Scott Jorgensen, who will fight Dominick Cruz for the title in December, and lightweight Anthony Njokuani, who will battle Edward Faaloloto in November.

"I think I'm going to be a UFC champion come January 1! I didn't even know what happened, I was asleep. I had a missed call from my manager and a text from you," Jorgensen told Cagewriter. He also said that he is looking forward to being exposed to a whole new audience, who will love his style of fighting.

"I don't put on dull fights," Jorgensen said. "The fact that we're on the UFC stage means that I get to show more people how exciting and how tough I really am. Every UFC fan that wasn't a WEC fan will become my fan now."

Njokuani didn't have any specific UFC fighter that he wanted to call out. He was just happy about the news.

"Oh, hell yeah. I'm ecstatic," he told Cagewriter. "There's nobody. Whoever I go up against, I'm just using that person to show the world what I've got."

UFC 121 rebirth for Sanchez; Diego's pace does in Thiago

Diego Sanchez went back home for his fight against Paulo Thiago. The last few years, the Season 1 "Ultimate Fighter" middleweight champ lost his way and focus as he ennoyed his taste of stardom. Along that path, he also had a very public split with his trainer Greg Jackson. After suffering two straight losses, Sanchez decided it was time to bury the hatchet. He returned to his hometown Albuquerque, the site of Jackson's gym and tonight he looked like his old self. By the middle of the second, his relentless pace badly tired Thiago. Sanchez gets back on the horse with a unanimous decision victory, 30-26, 29-28 and 29-28, at UFC 121 in Anaheim.

"You know I was really humbled in the last two losses," Sanchez told UFC analyst Joe Rogan. "My motto for this camp was just earn it. I want to thank my team."

Update: Sanchez and Thiago got an extra $70,000 for their effort by nabbing the fight of the night bonus.

The first round actually went to Thiago on two-of-three scorecards. Sanchez looked too small for the Brazilian, who threw him away each time Diego looked for the takedown. Thiago also got the better of the standup. The key for Sanchez was pushing the action all five minutes. Things turned early in the second. Sanchez was able to close space and Thiago didn't make him pay.

Sanchez (22-4, 11-4 UFC) scored a takedown 35 seconds into the round and maintained top control for the next three minutes. When it rose to the feet, Sanchez threw Thiago on his shoulder, walked across the Octagon and screamed as he slammed him to the ground.

Before the final round, Sanchez's corner yelled "pressure, pressure, pressure." The fighter delivered. Sanchez scored an early takedown and eventually got Thiago's back. The rest of the round, Sanchez used a body lock to control Thiago (13-3, 3-3 UFC) in several different positions. In the final minute, Sanchez worked the full mount and landed some heavy shots. One of the judges scored it 10-8 in the final stanza.

Before the fight, Sanchez was debating whether he should return to the 155-pound weight class. This was a solid win that might keep him around at welterweight.

UFC featherweight division should be inviting to new talent

Jose Aldo has set the standard at 145 pounds but the featherweight division isn't without hope now that it's part of the UFC. There are no financial limitations when it comes to bringing in talent from outside the organization and now the UFC has little more ammo to work with when pitching its smaller lightweights that it may be time to drop a weight class.

Top candidates to bolster the 145-pound roster

1. Clay Guida
2. Jim Miller
3. Joe Stevenson
4. Mark Bocek
5. Cole Miller

Others with UFC and outside the promotion: Matt Wiman, Mac Danzig, Nik Lentz, Efrain Escudero, Marlon Sandro.

'Filthy' Tom Lawlor cuts out his dirty, drinking ways

Witnessing his hilarious ring entrances, we've seen what a wackjob Tom Lawlor can be just before fights. Little did we know that Lawlor was pushing the limits of sanity with his training camp and prefight partying. That may have been fine during Season 8 of "The Ultimate Fighter" and his run on the minor league circuit, but Lawlor found out it doesn't cut it in the UFC. Now he's facing a must-win fight against Patrick Cote at UFC 121. Winless in 2010, Lawlor had to make some changes.

"I haven't been going wild for the past seven or eight weeks which is kind of a departure from my normal situation," Lawlor told Neil Davidson from The Canadian Press. "It might be hard to believe but I'm being dead honest. There's been times that two weeks before, a week before, I'm out drinking, staying out late, partying. And I got away with it."

Lawlor (6-3, 2-2 UFC) admits MMA came easy when he first started.

"For a while [the drinking and partying] just didn't matter, I didn't care," said Lawlor. "I had such a carefree attitude that I didn't feel like anybody was going to stop me, no matter what I did. After a while I think it just came back to bite me."

Lawlor jumped out to a quick start in his January fight against Aaron Simpson only to wilt down the stretch and laid an egg versus Joe Doerksen at UFC 113, getting choked out in the second.

Lawlor claims he didn't gas out in those losses. It was more a case of overtraining. He prepped for this one in the Boston area with fellow UFC fighter Joe Lauzon, where he cut out the partying and drinking along with managing his workouts more carefully. The 27-year-old can feel the difference.

"In the past it's been hard to kind of walk around, even on a day-to-day basis," said Lawlor. "And I'm not sure if that's just from wear and tear on my body or years of [amateur] wrestling or the couple of years I did of pro wrestling or what it is. But my joints and stuff feel fresher now. I'm sure it has something to do with my body not inflaming up because of massive amounts of alcohol that I've been drinking."

Lawlor has a tough test in Cote, who is also facing what could be a must-win situation. Recovering from a slew of injuries, Cote (13-6, 4-3 UFC) was away from the Octagon for over 20 months, falling way back in the 185-pound pack. Cote lost his comeback fight against Alan Belcher in May.

One bit of bad news from Lawlor. Because he's fighting on the Spike television portion of the card, he can't approach the cage with one of his inventive themes.

UFC/WEC merger press conference notes: Aldo fights at UFC 125

Hardcore fight fans know the WEC has a great product and now those fighters will get to show their skills on the big stage at UFC shows. UFC president Dana White announced this afternoon that the WEC is merging with the UFC. The WEC features the 135, 145 and 155 pound weight classes. So greats like Jose Aldo, Dominick Cruz, Ben Henderson, Urijah Faber, Joe Benavidez and Miguel Torres will all be branded as UFC fighters.

This is also a big boost for Versus. The WEC's network will air four UFC cards in 2011. That should deliver a huge ratings boost. It appears simply because of the name WEC, the 2010 WEC shows were consistently delivering only a third the audience that similar UFC shows were on Spike. That gap should be closed significantly in 2011.

Here are the key points discussed during today's conference call:

- The final WEC card is Dec. 16 in Phoenix

- Versus will present four UFC cards in 2011

- The winner of the Ben Henderson-Anthony Pettis fight on Dec. 16 will carry the WEC lightweight belt over to the UFC and get an immediate shot at the winner of UFC champ Frank Edgar versus Gray Maynard. It could be promoted as a unification bout, UFC versus WEC.

- Jose Aldo is now the UFC featherweight champion and will battle a fighter TBA at UFC 125 on Jan. 1. Rumors have swirled that it's Mark Hominick with Josh Grispi as the alternate.

- Dominick Cruz defends his 135-title against Scott Jorgensen on Dec. 16. Whoever wins is the new UFC bantamweight champ.

- It's likely that all UFC featherweight and bantamweight title fights will now be on pay-per-view

- All employees of the WEC, including GM Reed Harris and matchmaker Sean Shelby, are still part of the Zuffa family. WEC ring girl Brittany Palmer's status is unknown.

UPDATE: Palmer is coming over the UFC. According to Fighter's Only Magazine, White confirmed that via Twitter.

- This opens the door for "The Ultimate Fighter" to feature fighters from the 135 and 145 pound weight classes.

- The promotion hasn't discussed future TUF's but this could mean a coaching showdown between Urijah Faber and Miguel Torres

- WEC fighters will have to adjust to a bigger cage. The Octagon is larger than the current WEC cage by five-feet in diameter.

- The reported story that the UFC was going announce a network with deal with Fox or NBC plus the addition of a UFC network was purely speculation (5:26 mark - Part 1 video).

- A 125-pound weight class is on the way but White had no timetable for its arrival.

Listen here for part three.

Matt Hughes: UFC Needs a Fighter to Balance Joe Rogan

by Michael David SmithIn almost every television broadcast of almost every sport, one of the commentators is an athlete who has competed in the sport being shown. You never watch an NFL game without hearing analysis from a former football player, or a Major League Baseball game without hearing the voice of a former baseball player.

But in the UFC, the commentary role goes to Joe Rogan, who's undeniably knowledgeable about MMA but whose background is in comedy and acting, not in fighting.

Matt Hughes says it's time for the UFC to add a fighter to the broadcast.

UFC's Mir, Griffin and Bonnar make excellent attack dog bait

Frank Mir, Forrest Griffin and Stephan Bonnar aren't training for a bout at the moment, so what are they doing with their time? Getting attacked by dogs, of course. All three volunteered at the Las Vegas Police Canine Trial, an event where canine dogs compete to show who can bite the best. Their job consisted of standing pat while trained police dogs ran them down and took a bite.

What experience do they have that qualifies them for this job? "I fought a giraffe once," Griffin said. Not to mention, their jobs as mixed martial artists gives them a pretty good idea on how to remain calm when someone is coming at you.

Surfploytation by Damian Fulton

Brand new work by Damian Fulton on show at La Luz de Jesus Gallery in LA, California from July 2 - August 1, 2010

Damian Fulton is fascinated by the dichotomy and duality of Los Angeles seaside culture. The proximity of one of the world's most diverse and congested cities to the Pacific coast provides fertile material for Damian's dark take on the California dream. Perhaps it's in the water.

Surfploytation continues Damian's twisted ride down PCH where Surf City is way more Gotham than groovy. Car chases, girls with guns, noir nostalgia, a visual narrative that reads like conceptual art for a fictional Surfploytation movie. For this show, experimentation with new materials native to his environment, balsa wood and fiberglass, skate decks, and surfboard fins, have this new work amped up to 11.

Before focusing on his own vision, Damian helped, Disneyland, Marvel Productions, and various magazines find theirs.

Velasquez slays the beast to take Lesnar's title at UFC 121

Brock Lesnar is a monster but he met his match in terms of power, and especially speed and stamina. In the opening seconds of the fight, the gigantic MMA force tried to impose his will on the smaller Cain Velasquez. Velasquez didn't back down. In fact, he rose almost instantly after an early takedown and from there you knew Lesnar was in for a battle. The 6-foot-4, 270-pounder tired quickly, Velasquez didn't let up and laid a beating on Lesnar. By the fourth minute of the fight, Lesnar couldn't take anymore. With blood all over his face, Lesnar turned to his side to shy away from the onslaught. Velasquez rips the UFC heavyweight title away from Lesnar with a TKO stoppage at 4:12 of the first round.

"I didn't (expect that)," Velasquez told UFC analyst Joe Rogan. "I trained for a five round fight. You can't expect an early stoppage or a first round fight. You gotta train for the whole fight."

Lesnar (5-2, 3-2 UFC) handled the defeat with class.

"I expected nothing less (from him). He's a great fighter," said Lesnar. "I knew I had a great challenge in front of me. What can I say? He was better than me tonight."

Update: Velasquez's finish earned him the knockout of the night bonus of $70,000.

The 28-year-old Velasquez (9-0, 7-0 UFC) overcame what was likely a 25-pound weight disadvantage, four inches in reach and three inches in height. The way the fight unfolded you'd never know that he was the smaller guy.

Lesnar charged across the Octagon throwing punches and even a wild flying knee. He got a hold of Velasquez and the fight hit the floor just 30 seconds in. But just like Lesnar, the Mexican-American was a high level Div. 1 collegiate wrestling star. It only took him just a few seconds to rise to his feet.

The next test of power and leverage came along the cage in a clinch situation. Velasquez stayed calm and had zero issues. When the fighters separated, Velasquez let his hands go. He nailed Lesnar with a left hook and then grabbed a single leg to go for a takedown of his own. Lesnar went down on one knee and seconds later was down on both knees. Velasquez had hip control and started pounding away with some big shots. Eventually Lesnar settled to his back but that was even worse. He was pinned on the cage and took a vicious beating.

Lesnar was in the identical position at UFC 116. That's where he weathered the storm against Shane Carwin, who eventually gassed himself out. Velasquez wasn't going to do that. He picked his shots and opened up a huge slice under Lesnar's right eye. Referee Herb Dean had to save the champ.

Before we go labeling Velasquez unbeatable like people did with Lesnar, remember there's more talent on the way.

The UFC's heavyweight division has never been better. Next up for Velasquez is an excellent striker in Junior Dos Santos. And then Carwin and Lesnar can fight their way back into the mix. The quick finish tonight may allow the UFC to stack one of its January, February or March cards in 2011 with the Cain-JDS heavyweight title showdown.

USC QB wants to go all Velasquez on Oregon, the Lesnars from the north

Here's more proof the kiddies between 18 and 34 years old love their mixed martial arts. The L.A. Times says USC quarterback Matt Barkley has "caused a stir" with his MMA-related Tweet regarding the Trojans' upcoming game against unbeaten Oregon. The 21-year-old from Newport Beach, Calif., must've enjoyed David toppling Goliath when Cain Velasquez pulled the upset on Brock Lesnar at UFC 121. Tweeted Barkley:

"Wow, Brock just got rocked! Lesnar is to Oregon as Velasquez is to SC. Lezgo."

Before it was deleted, the QB's Tweet was re-Tweeted by plenty of Ducks fans.

Why would Oregon fans be insulted? Their team is the bully on the block in the Pac-10. It seems like a nice comparison. Was it really an insult? The insult comes when you force a kid who makes a harmless analogy feel like he did something wrong.

"That had nothing to do with Oregon," Barkley said after practice. "I just got fired up thinking about my teammates.

"It had to do with kind of being an underdog in a big fight, like we're going into. Everyone, of course, takes it out of context and blows it up. But that was about us and about our team and the adversity we've been through."

Chip Kelly probably appreciates the comparison. After all, the Oregon coach is the guy who uses classic boxing wars to get his players fired up. Kelly had the team watch the 2002 fight where "Irish" Mickey Ward pulled the upset on Arturo Gatti.

"You can get knocked out in the seventh round -- all you can do is be ready to battle each week and make it to the eighth round,'' Kelly said.

Ward, an old friend of Kelly's, actually spoke to the team last week. Kelly likens the season to a 12-round fight.

So let's get this clear Oregon fans, your coach can use fighting references to talk about the games but USC can't?

Cowherd says UFC 121 viewer numbers will crush MLB playoffs

Memories of MMA in 2004 seem like 20 years ago. Those were the days when the sport couldn't sniff coverage from any mainstream media outlet. UFC 50 drew just over 6,000 paid customers in Atlantic City and the pay-per-view only had 40,000 buys. Now we're debating whether UFC 121 will "disappoint" at only 800,000 buys or if Brock Lesnar haul in another audience of one million-plus? Television exposure and more coverage from big outlets has grown sport exponentially. We saw some great examples today. In the middle football season and the Major League Baseball playoffs, UFC was all over ESPN on the television side and ESPNRadio spent some quality time talking MMA when Tito Ortiz appeared on Colin Cowherd's nationally syndicated show.

Cowherd lambasted the old guard media for not recognizing how huge MMA is with 18-30 year olds.

"American newspapers are dying for 18-30 year old readers," said Cowherd. "Do you realize that Brock Lesnar and Tito Ortiz on pay-per-view will have more 19-year-old viewers than the American League Championship series on free TV?"

Cowherd introduced the conversation with Ortiz by saying that he recently sat down with four 20-something males from Boston and asked them what their favorite sports were. The 46-year-old said he was surprised when none of the guys mentioned the Red Sox at the top of the list. They listed NFL first and MMA second.

SportsCenter was hot and heavy for UFC 121. Brock Lesnar appeared last night and Sports Nation this afternoon. Even Cain Velasquez got a push on SportsCenter this morning.
