Initial autopsy report inconclusive in South Carolina fighter’s death

An initial autopsy performed on Tyrone "Teestea" Mims, an amateur fighter who died on Saturday night after competing at a regional fight show in South Carolina, has proven inconclusive, according to the Charleston County Coroner.  Toxicology tests are pending.

Mims was stepping into the cage for the first time, and was competing at an event called "Fight Night at the Point VI."  He allegedly suffered minimal damage during his bout, and witness accounts had him dominating throughout the first round.  But Mims began appearing exhausted in the second round, and when the 30-year-old seemed unable to improve his position, the referee stopped the bout.  Mims was taken backstage; when his condition deteriorated, he was taken to Medical University Hospital, where he died.

Mims, a Georgia resident, was taking part in a reality show titled "Georgia Boy's Grits-n-Glory."  The show released the following statement:

One of the fighters, who happened to be our own Tyrone "Teestea" Mims, was fatally injured tonight, possibly as a result of his fight.  The promoters and the South Carolina Fight Commission consulted with the fighters and all involved and decided as a result of the death of one of their own we should call off the rest of the fights.  The promoters and the Athletic Commission did everything in their power according to protocol and this accident was beyond their control.  We apologize for the inconvenience and hope you'll understand as we deal with the gravity of the situation.  Our thoughts and prayers are with Teestea and his immediate family, which include his five children.

This is the second mixed martial arts-related death in South Carolina history.  In 2010, amateur fighter Michael Kirkham died from a brain hemorrhage after suffering a knockout at an event in Aiken, S.C.

As per state regulation, amateur fighters must pass an eye exam, be screened for HIV and Hepatitis, and pass a cursory examination by a physician prior to getting in the cage.  It is unknown if Mims had completed those requirements.

Surf Artist - Dominique Amendola

Introducing French artist (now living in India, which is a new location for COTW's artist base); Dominique Amendola. Dominique paints a vast array of subject matter, but her 'surf art' is particularly interesting and something 'new'… She takes famous paintings from great artists (e.g. Van Gogh) and gives them a surfing twist! She calls this the "Amadeus series" and she tells us there are more on the way, so watch this space…

Joe Lauzon: A Few Words Before Battle

UFC on FOX 4 may have "big picture" relevance because of the light-heavyweight four-way scrum that will determine UFC champ Jon Jones' next opponent, but one shouldn't overlook some of the event's other gems — not the least of which is the match-up between Joe Lauzon and Jamie Varner.  Originally slated to face Terry Etim until Etim bowed out with an injury, Lauzon is primed and ready to explode all over Varner, showering the former WEC champ with submission attempt-shrapnel and fistic debris.  Cagewriter caught up with Lauzon on Thursday, a day that saw the Massachusetts native venturing away from the fighters' hotel and exploring other parts of Los Angeles.

First of all, how are you?  Are you healthy?

"I'm good.  There are always little injuries that add up a little bit, but I'm doing good."

You're an old timer now in terms of the fight week experience.  How is it out there?

"It's not too bad.  I have a bunch of guys that are here with me usually, and this week as always.  We like to get out of the hotel room - I used to just sit in the hotel room a lot and that would get a little stale.  So we try to keep busy.  Today we went down to Venice Beach and just kind of moved around a little bit.  I did some training today, nice and light, just to kind of break a sweat and keep things as normal as possible."

Did you prepare any differently knowing your opponent was going to be Jamie Varner?

"Not really.  It was kind of short notice, it was only a couple of weeks.  We switched from getting ready to fight Etim, who is really long and has kind of herky-jerky footwork and keeps you real far away with kicks, to Varner, who is a smoother boxer.  Not so much a kickboxer, but a straight-up boxer with good wrestling.  So we didn't have a ton of time to get super-detailed about stuff.  I was in good shape so we just reorganized our drills, and switched it up a little bit."

Is there any pressure to perform?

"Not more than usual.  I always put a lot of pressure on myself to try to have a spectacular fight and put people away.  It's big show, it's on FOX, but it's really not any different than other shows besides having a little bit of extra media.  It's still a fight.  If it was on the undercard of a Fight Night, it'd be the exact same thing."

Any thoughts on who you'd want to fight next?

"Nope.  I'm one-hundred percent Jamie Varner now, and I'm not even thinking about what's going on after."

Hypothetical: what if it was the PRIDE FC days and the Japanese offer you a wheelbarrow full of money to fight Jon Jones.  Do you take the fight?

"Absolutely.  If they're going to pay me to try to fight Jon Jones, I'm going to shoot a little single[-leg takedown], and if it doesn't go my way, I'm getting the hell out of there.  And then I'll take that wheelbarrow full of money.

Wagner Prado’s UFC debut ends with eye poke, no contest (PHOTO)

Phil Davis and Wagner Prado's night ended quickly. Less than two minutes into their bout during the preliminary card of UFC on Fox 4, Davis hit Prado with an eye poke. When the fight doctor checked on Prado's eye, which was bleeding and swollen, Prado said he was seeing double. Though Prado protested, the bout was stopped and called a no-contest.

The ending of the bout was a disappointing way for Prado's UFC bout to end. His record is now 8-0-1. For Davis, it was his first fight after losing in a title contender fight against Rashad Evans in January.

Shogun, BJ Penn, Joe Lauzon: The Morning News Roundup – 8.5.12

Man, what a show last night, huh?  After a string of events that had me questioning whether I should bother paying my cable bill, UFC on FOX 4 knocks it out of the park.  The UFC's resident karate man earned himself a shot at the light-heavyweight belt, Joe Lauzon did what Joe Lauzon does, and Mike Swick returned after a lengthy layoff to rack up a win via knockout.  All your morning news pertains to info gleaned from the post-fight presser, so let's get right to it.

  • UFC president Dana White didn't have nice things to say about Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at the post-fight press conference.  Well, he didn't exactly say anything that bad, but, you know, you kind of don't want your boss talking about you like this.

  • Rory MacDonald is injured and out of his UFC 152 fight with B.J. Penn.  Oh noes!

  • For putting on yet another exciting fight and finishing opponent Jamie Varner, UFC lightweight Joe Lauzon pocketed a cool 100 grand in bonus money last night.  For all you bean counters out there, that's $50,000 for Submission of the Night and $50,000 for Fight of the Night.  That's going to make for a pretty decent barbecue at Chez Lauzon in Massachusetts.

  • Mike Swick took home the Knockout of the Night bonus for sending DaMarques Johnson into La-La Land.  Nice comeback, no?

  • Brandon Vera's got nothing to be ashamed about.  He was the heavy underdog going into his fight with Shogun, and fought his heart out.

Eddie Alvarez, Shogun/Vera, UFC Light-Heavyweight Title Shot: Morning News Roundup – 7.31.12

The Rexplex Sports Complex in Elizabeth, N.J., in December of 2003.  Ah yes, I remember it well.  The ring was set up next to a skate ramp, with a big curtain seperating us MMA folks from the kids doing tricks on their skateboards.  As for the fights, some lanky dude named Luke Cummo put his jiu-jitsu skills to good use and won his bout via submission, while another up-and-comer named Jay Hieron completely steamrolled over his foe.  We paid attention to those bouts a bit more because Cummo and Hieron were somewhat established in the area, and though people cheered when Eddie Alvarez scored a dominant KO in his MMA debut, no one knew who Alvarez was or what he'd eventually accomplish in the sport.  Why did I take this stroll down memory lane?  Because Alvarez is leading off your morning news roundup.

  • Former Bellator lightweight champ Eddie Alvarez has one fight left on his contract, and it looks like it's going to be used for a match-up against fearsome Brazilian monster Patricky "Pitbull" Freire.  When it comes to fighter contracts and the willingness of promotions to re-sign their stars, there are a lot of moving parts that must taken into consideration - things like actual cost, anticipated revenue and just what the parties can do to further each other's interests.  As one of Bellator's first "big" signings, Alvarez brought a ton of credibility to the organization, and Bjorn Rebney definitely made it worthwhile for the Philadelphia native in terms of cheddar.  But nothing lasts forever, so here we are with a high-ranking lightweight very likely about to enter free agency.  What do you do with him if you're Bellator?  Give him a tough, sure-fire exciting match-up that will make your October 12 show a memorable one of course.  And if you're Alvarez, you're going to want to win in the most impressive way possible to make sure your value when you enter free agency is at its highest.  Well, you know who wins in all this?  Us fans, because, Alvarez vs. Freire... yikes!  That's all kinds of "wow"!

  • Yesterday UFC president Dana White said Saturday's UFC on FOX 4 main event between Mauricio "Shogun" Rua and Brandon Vera would determine the number one contender for UFC light-heavyweight champ Jon Jones' belt.  Reactions were mixed (to put it lightly).  Now White is backtracking a little bit and saying that if either of the occupants of Saturday's co-main event - a tilt between Lyoto Machida and Ryan Bader - look impressive enough in victory, they could get the title shot instead.  This certainly makes more sense.  At least, only insomuch as Jones has pretty much slaughtered everyone that he's faced (including Shogun, Vera, Machida and Bader in prior match-ups), and why not offer up the title shot to whoever looks good?  At this rate, Jones is going to be the first UFC champ to get to fight two challengers in the cage at once.  (He'd probably win that fight, too.)

  • Former UFC welterweight contender Jon Fitch will be facing rising star Erick Silva at UFC 153 in Brazil.  You have to imagine that at this point, after having had a run at the title but failing to move the needle in terms of exciting the fans, Fitch is on that spreadsheet that the UFC keeps that's titled "Fighters To Get Rid Of".  Dude has to do something to get off that list...

That's all for now.

Rousey, Kaufman, Carano – The World According to Munah

In case you were wondering, female mixed martial arts is still very much alive and kicking.  The latest installment of the Invicta Fighting Championships is this Saturday night, and in August, Strikeforce returns to Showtime with a main event that will feature champ Ronda Rousey attempting to remove challenger Sarah Kaufman's arm in the most painful, non-surgical way possible.  Yep.  Wimmins.  They be fightin'.  So in the spirit of all this impending violence perpetrated by the fairer sex, Cagewriter tracked down 125-pound female fighter Munah Holland, who knocked out Strikeforce veteran Carina Damm two weeks ago at Matrix Fights (a regional show in Philadelphia) to get her perspective on things.  She is, after all, on the front lines.

Things to know about Holland: she's a product of the Tiger Schulmann MMA system, and manages one of the organization's gyms in New Jersey.  In 2004, she won the prestigious Golden Gloves amateur boxing tournament, transitioned to professional fighting with Chuck Norris' ill-fated kickboxing promotion the World Combat League, and now fights in the cage, shimmying out of the clutches of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belts and feeding them knuckles until they fall.   In her MMA debut, Holland brutalized Kim Couture for three rounds; more recently, she's KO'd top New England fighter Marianna Kheyfets in Bellator and put away Damm.

That's Holland.  Here's what she had to say about some of her fellow fighters:

On Strikeforce bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey - "Ronda is, I would say, this deliciously deadly, amazing person.  She has something that, when I watch her fight, is incredibly contained, and at the same time, explosive.  It's really fun to watch, and her ground game is sick.  She is definitely a force to be reckoned with, no matter her opponent in front of her.  I can't wait for the upcoming fight between her and Sarah Kaufman — I think that's going to be a great fight."

On top Strikeforce bantamweight challenger and former champ Sarah Kaufman - "I've watched Sarah for a long time, because as a female martial artist, she was one of the girls I knew about first.  She's got really, really powerful hands — like, lead in her hands.  She's very dangerous.  She's constantly evolving… got a lot of heart, and like Ronda, she's a force to be reckoned with.  And Sarah has some very good wrestling, so it's going to be interesting, because if Sarah can maintain her wrestling defense and use her hands and use her range, it could be a really interesting fight.  If it stays standing, Sarah can do some damage with her hands.  We haven't really seen Ronda's chin, we don't know how much damage it can take."  Her prediction for the August 18 Strikeforce title fight?  "If it stays standing, Sarah's going to have the advantage.  If it goes to the ground, my gut says Ronda."

On former Strikeforce bantamweight champ Miesha Tate - "I love Miesha.  I once said this out loud and people heard me, but if you have a bum that looks like Miesha's, you've got to plaster it everywhere.  She's beautiful, she's tough as nails.  And that fight with Ronda, that was sick."

On former Strikeforce featherweight champ Gina Carano - "Gina, I think, has done a world of good for female fighting in general.  She's chosen her own path, and gone the way she feels where her future lies.  You have to do whatever it is you have to do in this world to have a life and a good living, but I thank her for exposing female martial artists to the world, and making it important for people to watch and making it exciting for people to watch, and proving that, regardless of whether it's females or males, it's just a great sport to watch.  She proved that the numbers can be there, that the seats can be filled for female mixed martial artists just as they can for men."

On former Strikeforce featherweight champ Cris "Cyborg" Santos — "Cyborg would scare most grown men away in the cage.  The first time I saw Cris Cyborg, I was like, 'Uh, this woman is just frightening.'  And frightening in a good way.  What a beast.  What a beast of mass proportions.  This girl… frightening strength, amazing ability coming from Chute Boxe, can really take so much.  She's just like a pitbull.  She's just going to keep on coming and keep on coming."

On female MMA pioneer Tara LaRosa - "Long before Gina or Cyborg came into the picture, you'd hear about Tara just making her way through one person after another in the circuit — especially in New Jersey, where she's got a lot of fans.  For me, she was definitely an inspiration.  We can do it, we can do it really well and with a lot of class."

On hoping to fight in the UFC one day - "Oh yeah.  Some little girls want to grow up and wear pink slippers, but for me, the thought of being in the UFC…  I hope it gets to that point for women, I hope it gets to that point in my MMA lifetime.  We can only hope for that.  Who wouldn't want to be in that arena?"

On Dana White reconsidering his stance on not allowing women in the UFC's Octagon - "I don't know any woman who wouldn't want to see women in the UFC, and I hope Dana White considers that at some point.  Because we'll bring the crowds, we'll fill the seats, and people really enjoy watching it."

Countdown to UFC 150: Henderson vs. Edgar

Fuel TV has made last night's "Countdown to UFC 150: Henderson vs. Edgar" free to view on their official youtube page ahead of both men rematching for the UFC Lightweight Title this Saturday at the Pepsi Center in Denver, Colorado. Unlike their first meeting, which took place at UFC 144 in Japan this passed February, it is Benson Henderson who walks into the octagon carrying the championship. Frankie Edgar now looks to take revenge on the man who wrested the title from him in the "Smooth" one.

UFC on FOX 4 Preview: The Undercard Breakdown

Thanks to years of research, countless probability models and a complex set of algorithms, I have developed a system that can predict the winner of an MMA bout with a stunning fifteen-percent level of accuracy.  I know, I know, it's a breakthrough that will most certainly make me rich.  But until the oddsmakers in Las Vegas make me an offer that I find acceptable, you all get to benefit from this nigh-infallible prognosticative method.  First up on the fortune telling schedule: the UFC on FOX 4 undercard!

  • Cole Miller vs. Nam Phan — American Top Team featherweight mean-mugger Miller had a rough time against "The Ultimate Fighter — Season 14" exponent Steven Siler back in March, but he's still a skilled and dangerous jiu-jitsu specialist capable of using his lanky limbs to tie people in knots.  TUF 12 veteran Phan, on the other hand, may be a jiu-jitsu black belt, but as we saw in his bout against Jimy Hettes at UFC 141, the Vietnamese warrior is very open to getting dominated on the ground.  The only gray area here is whether or not Miller can get Phan down.  If he can, expect Phan to survive to the final bell but lose via clear-cut decision.

  • Phil Davis vs. Wagner Prado —Light-heavyweight Davis is to wrestling what Steven Seagal is to yellow-tinted sunglasses — which is to say, Davis is a bad, bad dude who can control almost anyone.   Prado is making his Octagon debut at UFC on FOX 4, and though he trains with the Nogueira brothers and is supposedly some kind of ace striker, he's going to get handled by the Division I All-American wrestler in a big way.  Takedowns, pins, tech falls — Davis is going to do it all, and earn the unanimous decision win in the process.

  • Josh Grispi vs. Rani Yahya — Two years ago, New Englander Grispi was one of the most promising up-and-coming featherweights in the WEC, and it seemed as if he was destined to battle champ Jose Aldo for the UFC's 145-pound division belt.  But the hype train got derailed in a big way — first by Louisiana-based fighter Dustin Poirier's knuckle sandwiches at UFC 125, then by George Roop's body-blow KO at the TUF 13 Finale.  Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt and 2007 grappling champ Yahya isn't that dangerous on the feet, just on the ground, so Grispi just might have the skills to get the "W".  This one is also going to decision, with Grispi taking it by virtue of being on top more than being on the bottom.

  • Phil De Fries vs. Oli Thompson — In his UFC debut back at UFC on Fuel TV: "Sanchez vs. Ellenberger", Brit heavyweight De Fries got chewed up and spit out in a mere 43 seconds against Stipe Miocic.  However,Brit strongman Thompson faired only slightly better against Shawn Jordan at UFC on FX: "Alves vs. Kampmann", getting TKO'd in the second round, so the question here is who can pull it together more effectively for their second UFC appearance.  My algorithms are telling me it's going to be De Fries via TKO, but really, it's six of one and half a dozen of the other.

  • Manny Gamburyan vs. Michihiro Omigawa — Omigawa hails from Japan, sports a pretty decent judo background, and racked up some decent wins fighting in organizations like DEEP and Sengoku.  Unfortunately, in six UFC appearances he has won a grand total of once.  Yes, he's tough as nails and extremely hard to finish, but he lacks that special quality (which we'll simply call "ability to win").  Armenian fireplug Gamburyan is cut from a similar cloth; after taking second place in the fifth season of The Ultimate Fighter, he's fought in the UFC seven times and tasted victory twice.  He, too, is tough and lacks ability to win, but he's also been plagued by injuries.  For that, I see Omigawa winning either by decision or by Gamburyan's limbs inadvertently falling off and him not being able to continue.

  • John Moraga vs. Ulysses Gomez — Hey, it's two Octagon newcomers, making their UFC debut in a bout that will be broadcast on either Facebook, MySpace, Friendster or maybe even LinkedIn.  Who knows.  Either way, both men have worked their way up the regional circuits — Moraga through Arizona's Rage in the Cage and Gomez through California's Tachi Palace Fights.  Because Octagon jitters are going to be hanging over these men like an oppressive fog of lethargy, my algorithms are literally shrugging at me.  I guess I'll pick Gomez, but that's solely because I think I'd have more fun checking out a TPF show than a RITC show.  Arizona's got a problem with ants, you know.  They're everywhere.

Who you trying to get crazy with, ese?  Don't you know I'm loco?

Lyoto Machida ‘impressive’ in knockout of Ryan Bader

UFC president Dana White said the next light heavyweight title shot would go to the light heavyweight who was the most impressive among the main event and co-main event at UFC on Fox 3. Was Lyoto Machida's knockout of Ryan Bader impressive enough? Tell us in the comments, on Facebook or on Twitter.

Jon Fitch, Nate Diaz, UFC 150: The Morning News Roundup – 8.8.12

As the saying goes, it's all about the Benjamins — which, if my handy "Biggie Smalls Street Vernacular Dictionary — Volume 2" is accurate, means it's ultimately all about money.  Money is what fighters get when they take the biggest fights, sign the fattest contracts, and build up the most hype for whatever bouts they have scheduled for that week.  And hey, that's not a bad thing.  Fighting is a job, and the UFC is the top employer in the field, so why not make that wampum while you can?  Anyway, all this should clue you in on what today's morning news roundup is about: money.

  • UFC welterweight Jon Fitch really wants out of his rumored bout against Brazilian Erick Silva at UFC 153 — or at least, he would much rather have a rematch with Hawaiian fighting legend B.J. Penn.  Case in point: the disingenuous-seeming trash-talk Fitch is spewing.  I don't think Penn is a coward, most (if not all) of the world doesn't think Penn is a coward, and I seriously doubt Fitch truly thinks Penn is a coward.  But Fitch knows a fight with Penn could have a bigger bottom line, so here come the harsh words!

  • UFC lightweight contender Nate Diaz is holding a pen, and the tip of that pen is hovering over a new contract that UFC president Dana White has unfurled and flattened on the table.  Seems like a no-brainer that he sticks with the UFC, no?  I mean, where else is he going to go?  The Strikeforce lightweight champ is his buddy, and for him to go to Bellator, he'd have to sit on the shelf for a while.

  • The media call for UFC 150 was yesterday and MMAWeekly's got the audio.  Personally, media calls are all the same to me — the same spoon-fed hype and storylines, the same questions, the same faux-excitement.  They're just something that's done to drive media (and, subsequently, fan) interest, which presumably fuels pay-per-view sales.  The only time media calls are interesting is when PRIDE FC champ Fedor Emelianenko and his manager Vadim Finkelstein are on the line and we hear goats and water splashing and all sorts of weird stuff in the background (which actually happened once).

  • The folks at the UFC are helping erect a LGBTQ community center in Las Vegas, N.V., which is a pretty altruistic thing to do if you ask me.  MMAJunkie's got the quote from UFC executive Reed Harris:

"The UFC supports many worthwhile causes, and the Gay and Lesbian Community Center's goals of supporting human rights and offering programs for health and wellness are important causes that the entire UFC organization supports," Harris told MMAJunkie.com.  "We are pleased to be able to show support for an organization that offers health and wellness programs and seeks to better our community."

This little tidbit has nothing to do with money, but it's a good deed that deserves some recognition.

That's all for now.  Now, please, just leave me alone.
