Jones escapes car accident unscathed, will star in 'Unbreakable 2'*
UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones escaped disaster on Wednesday, walking away from a car accident just weeks before his bout with Ryan Bader at UFC 126. He tweeted a picture of his car afterwards, and said that the other driver had to be taken away in a stretcher.
This was a stroke of luck for Jones, because the bout with Bader is key to both men's careers. They have both risen through the ranks of the UFC, seemingly on a collision course. But was it luck? Or is he ... unbreakable?
In a rough and tumble sport like MMA, Jones has suffered very few injuries or cuts. Though he's broken an opponent's face, Jones has never even had a medical suspension for his UFC bouts. That could be because he is young and in excellent condition, or it's because he's the inspiration for the 2000 M.Night Shymalan movie "Unbreakable."
*He's not actually starring in "Unbreakable 2," because I'm pretty sure "Unbreakable" was too terrible of a movie to duplicate.

Fight for the Troops 2's Three Stars: Guillard, Wiman and Hominick
In addition to raising a ton of money for the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund, the UFC's Fight for the Troops 2 also had some fantastic individual performances. That made picking the three stars from this fight not an easy feat.
No. 1 star -- Melvin Guillard: His quick striking put a stop to the Evan Dunham hype train and earned Guillard a $30,000 Fight Knockout of the Night bonus. The next question is where does this put Guillard in the UFC's lightweight division? With Gray Maynard and Anthony Pettis both waiting for already-promised title shots, it's crowded at the top, but Guillard is on an impressive four-fight win streak. Our friends at Cage Potato have suggested a lightweight, 10-man battle royale. Let's do it.
No. 2 star -- Matt Wiman: "Handsome" inundated Cole Miller, never letting his striking up as he won the unanimous decision. Though Miller is usually more comfortable on the ground, Wiman owned him there, too.
No. 3 star -- Mark Hominick: With a title shot on the line, Hominick came through, knocking out his friend and training partner George Roop. For that win, he gets a chance to take Jose Aldo's belt from him. Wait ... is that really a prize?
Honorable mention -- UFC fans: Through phone donations alone -- not counting online donations which are still being tallied -- the Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund raised more than $600,000 to benefit wounded service men and women. The IFHF was so happy with the event that they are already looking forward to "Fight for the Troops 3" in 2012. Way to go, fight fans.

I have had a few days away from climbing - in fact, my last session was 3 weekends ago at Froggatt - and so I got back to the gym this week. My local gym has an auto-belay setup so I was able to do some indoor routes without company.
And I struggled! Struggled to get up some new 6a and 6b routes that had gone up recently. There are 6c routes in there that I’ve done so I know it’s not their grading system.
It’s simply my lack of recent work on indoor or outdoor walls. My forearms got pumped way too soon and all-in-all it was a bit of a wash out. My recent excursions outside may have contributed too, as it’s nowhere near as motivating to climb indoor to the sound of banging chart house compared to topping out on a beautiful outdoor route.
So - this week will be a return to climbing in all its glory, and to refocus on my journey to 7a.

Fedor breaks from training, wears Speedos to take polar bear plunge
Fedor Emelianenko will always be a mysterious character. The former PRIDE champ, who had a 10-year unbeaten streak snapped last year, still operates in old-school fashion. He continues to train in remote parts of Russia and last week he even took the polar bear plunge. From Bel.ru:
Even 20-degree frost has not prevented today, Epiphany, the faithful bathe in Stary Oskol river waters. In one jordan plunged ordinary citizens, officials and athletes. Multiple world champion in MMA Fedor Emelianenko on this day specially arrived in Stary Oskol, to purify themselves and gain strength and health for the whole year.
The black tights are a nice touch although Fedor's body type, 6-feet, 230 pounds, is probably better suited for the red trunks worn by fellow "Russian" pro wrestler Nikolai Volkov or currently sported by Japanese star Ikuhisa Minowa.
Fedor is set to kick off the Strikeforce heavyweight Grand Prix with a fight in New Jersey on Feb. 12 against Antonio Silva.

Fight for the Troops 2: McKenzie reps TUF 12 well in loss to Edwards
Cody McKenzie lost to Yves Edwards, but he proved he's a pretty solid mixed martial artist. The goofiest character to emerge from Season 12 of "The Ultimate Fighter" built his reputation on finishing opponents with a guillotine choke and talking to smack to Josh Koscheck. At Fight for the Troops 2, Edwards finished McKenzie with a rear-naked choke, but the bearded Alaskan showed he's got more to his arsenal.
McKenzie (12-1, 1-1 UFC) is learning on the job. His striking is very unorthodox, so he got picked apart in the first by Edwards. That may have led the veteran to sleep on him a bit to start the second.
McKenzie dragged Edwards (40-16, 8-4 UFC) to the ground with 3:33 left in the second, eventually got his back and pounded away for a few minutes. McKenzie's attack was relentless. Edwards survived that near two-minute onslaught and scrambled back to his feet. McKenzie got a little overanxious when he tried to get it down again. Edwards won the scramble this time and McKenzie found himself mounted. He eventually gave up his back where Edwards slapped on a nasty choke. McKenzie refused to tap and went out at 4:33 of the second.
Johnson finishes Guymon with nasty body lock
DaMarques Johnson has had trouble showing consistency since his stint on TUF 9. Tonight might be a leaping point for Johnson. He schooled Mike Guymon on the ground eventually taking the veteran's back and locking his legs in a body lock. Guymon tried to get to his knees, but was flattened out. Johnson (12-8, 3-2 UFC) wisely squeezed the hold and pulled up on Guymon's neck. "The Joker" couldn't take the pain for more than a few seconds and verbally tapped.
When he tried to rise to his feet, Guymon (12-5, 1-3 UFC) yelped and rolled back to the floor. UFC analyst Joe Rogan said he thought he saw something protruding from Guymon's back.

Strikeforce 'Diaz vs. Cyborg' picks, Vegas-style
Strikeforce is opening 2011 with a bang tonight in San Jose. The card highlighted by two title fights, also has Herschel Walker in his second MMA fight. The odds are huge for three of the four big fights. Welterweight champ Nick Diaz is a massive favorite over Evangelista "Cyborg" Santos. The same goes for the inexperienced Walker. At minus-340, that's quite the leap of faith by the public and the sportsbooks.
Roger Gracie is the smallest favorite at minus-150 over Trevor Prangley. The South African has an interesting challenge in front of him. He's giving away a lot of size against the 6-foot-4 jiu-jitsu ace. Gracie is the much better grappler. Once it gets to the ground, Prangley is in trouble. He's a powerful guy and savvy on the ground, but he won't be able to use his strength to muscle out of submission attempts.
Robbie Lawler is a big underdog against Strikeforce middleweight champ Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza. Jacare's jiu-jitsu pedigree is sick, but he's learning how to fight on the feet. Lawler has been a monster at middleweight. His takedown defense has always been solid. He's got a good shot at stealing some dog money at plus-210, with the power he's got in both hands.
The crew at Bloody Elbow made their picks straight up. Diaz swept the board while Jacare got the nod from 6-of-8 writers. Walker was picked by all eight, and according to BE, Prangley looks like a live dog. Five of the guys picked Prangley to take out the 2-0 Gracie. Luke Thomas was very down on Gracie:
I am not a believer in Roger Gracie. It's obviously amazing he can tap 7 world-class black belts in a row in grappling tournaments with a cross choke from the mount, but MMA is another story. He's got virtually no striking and virtually no wrestling. Prangley's got a little more of each. If the fight hits the third round, things get dicey, but I like Prangley to upset.
Strikeforce betting odds (Las Vegas Hilton):
Official plays in bold
Nick Diaz (-340) vs. Evangelista Santos (+280) - Welterweight title
Robbie Lawler (+210) vs. Ronaldo Souza (-250) - Middleweight title
Scott Carson (+280) vs. Herschel Walker (-340) - Heavyweight
Trevor Prangley (+130) vs. Roger Gracie (-150) - Light heavyweight

Former featherweight champ Brown loses again at Fight for the Troops 2
Mike Brown was on top of the world for much of 2008 and 2009, but things change quickly in mixed martial arts. The rest of the field has caught and begun to pass the former WEC featherweight champ. Rani Yahya dominated Brown in a grappling war to take a unanimous decision, 30-27, 29-28, 29-28, in an undercard bout at Fight for the Troops 2 at Fort Hood in Killeen, Tx.
This was actually Brown's second fight in last three weeks in the UFC. He lost on New Year's Day at UFC 125 via decision against Diego Nunes. Maybe it was too soon to bounce back. He didn't look fresh for most of the fight.
Brown (24-8, 0-3 UFC) was a dominant force when he first dropped down to 145, but his fortunes have changed quickly, losing two straight, 3-of-4 and 4-of-6.
Yahya (16-6, 1-0 UFC) set the tone early with his grappling. The Brazilian is slight compared Brown, but he looked like the much stronger fighter in the clinch, and when the fight hit the floor.
Yahya was close to setting up a rear-naked choke at the end of the first. Brown was already breathing heavily. In the second, Brown opted to lock horns again with Yahya. He got it to the ground but could never settle into a dominant position. After a stalemate on the floor for three minutes, the fight got back to the feet. Brown looked sluggish and was missing badly with right hands from a distance. Brown did enough to take the round on two cards, but was out of gas.
In With about 50 seconds gone by in the final round, Yahya scored a takedown. A minute later, Yahya had his back. He did significant damage with punches and worked for a choke. He was pounding away, but referee Mario Yamasaki thought he saw some illegal shots and put the fight back on the feet. Brown couldn't mount an attack in the final minute.
Lowe's wrestling early on too much for Freire
Waylon Lowe isn't interested much in style points. He's a grinder, who relies on his wrestling to take the sting away from more well-rounded fighters. Willamy Freire may be a hot shot prospect, but he proved he still needs to work on his takedown defense. Lowe scored takedowns throughout the first two rounds. The American moved out to a 20-18 lead and survived gassing a bit in the final round to post his second UFC victory. Lowe won via unanimous decision, 29-28 on all scorecards.
The thickly muscled Lowe (10-3, 2-1 UFC) had a big advantage in the power department. Freire, 23, was too stationary when standing, allowing Lowe to charge forward for easy takedowns. On the ground, Freire was active from the bottom, but the judges gave the nod to Lowe who controlled things from the top.
Lowe was exhausted in the third and there for the taking, but Freire couldn't turn on the jets. After a scramble, he momentarily scored the mount. Freire eventually settled into Lowe's half guard with three minutes left in the fight. He did some damage with 12-15 lefts to Lowe's face, but the American scrambled and eventually got to his feet.
Non-televised undercard:
Chris Cariaso def. Will Campuzano via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).
Charlie Brenneman def. Amilcar Alves via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27).

'Jacare' vs. Lawler: What wins out, jiu-jitsu or striking?
Rich Chou may not be a known entity amongst casual sports fans, but he could be eventually if he keeps trotting out matchups like Robbie Lawler and Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza. Souza is one of the most dangeorus jiu-jitsu practitioners in mixed martial arts and Lawler is one of the sport's most dangerous knockout artists. Something has to give in this matchup unhatched by Strikeforce's young matchmaker (Showtime 10 p.m. ET/PT).
Jacare (pictured on the left) knows he's got to protect himself and get the fight to the ground.
“My plan is to bring jiu-jitsu to the fight. I don’t know how or when but I’m well prepared," Jacare said during the Strikeforce teleconference. "My guard is up and I will be 100 percent ready to go and fight. The plan for the fight is to bring jiu-jitsu to the table when the time is right.”
That where the problem starts for Jacare, all fights start on the feet. The Brazilian is still learning how to box and protect himself. Lawler, who possesses solid takedown defense, packs a huge wallop in his fists. His last three wins have all come in dramatic fashion via strikes.
“I have a great gym behind me. We’ve been training a lot in cardio and boxing and learning how to walk around the cage and the ring. I know he’s a good boxer so I’m doing everything necessary to prepare for that," Jacare said. "I’ve been training everything: boxing, wrestling, Jiu Jitsu, so I’m prepared to go in there and show everything."
Just eight weeks ago, Lawler finished off Matt Lindland with a vicious right hand in just 50 seconds. Keep in mind, Lawler is a southpaw.

Aldo's next! Hominick destroys Roop to lock in his title shot
Jose Aldo finally has an opponent. Mark Hominick was offered the chance to take on the UFC's featherweight champ if he could win tonight at Fight for the Troops 2. Josh Grispi had the same opportunity at UFC 125, but blew it with a loss to Dustin Poirier. Hominick learned the lesson and delivered big time by smoking George Roop in less than two minutes. The Canadian scored a TKO finish at 1:28 of the first round to make his title shot official.
"If you're next in line for a title shot you got go out there and prove it," Hominick told UFC analyst Joe Rogan. "I believe my standup is far superior to everybody in the featherweight division, but you have to show it. You have to prove it in the cage."
Whether he's the best striker up for debate, but there is no argument that he is incredibly composed on the feet. The much taller Roop tried to stay on the move and catch Hominick off guard by throwing kicks, punches and knees from odd angles.
Hominick calmly stalked Roop and picked his spot. After Roop threw a lazy jab, Hominick floored him with a straight just 36 seconds into the fight. Instead of jumping into Roop's guard, Hominick backed up and waved for the fallen fighter to get up.
Roop never seemed right the rest of the fight. He also fell into a bad habit by constantly moving to his left. With 3:54 remaining, Hominick nailed Roop with a left hook and eight seconds later he stunned him with a straight right. Roops was out of it and got caught with another big left hook. Down he went and with Roop's hands at his sides, Hominick nailed him one more time. Referee Don Turnage jumped in to stop the fight. Roop protested, but when he rose to his feet he stumbled across the Octagon.
Hominick's been rumored to face Aldo at UFC 129 in Toronto.
"Jose’s next. I think he’s the best pound for pound, but he’s never faced anyone like me," Hominick said. "I'm going to go out there and prove it."
The UFC is set to debut in Ontario in April. Hominicks' hometown is 100 miles to the south of Toronto.

No TV Again for Mike Brown
by Michael David SmithFormer featherweight champion Mike Brown will fight for the second time this month at Saturday night's Fight for the Troops 2. And for the second time this month, you won't see him unless you're in the building.
The UFC has decided to put Brown's fight with Rani Yahya on the non-televised undercard, and it won't even be one of the fights broadcast on Facebook before the Spike TV portion of the card begins. At UFC 125, when Brown lost a split decision to Diego Nunes, it was one of only two fights on the 11-fight card that wasn't televised, either on the pay-per-view broadcast or the Ion TV preliminary show.
For fans who know Brown both as a former No. 1 featherweight in the world, and as one of the most likable fighters in the sport, that's disappointing. But it's not surprising.
