Blogs brawl over how to critique female MMA

Blogs brawl over how to critique female MMA

If you thought Sarah Kaufman's win over Roxanne Modafferi was a great brawl, you should follow the throwdown over female MMA going down between several MMA blogs. One side thinks female MMA is unathletic, stinks and doesn't belong in a prime spot on television. The other is irked by the lack of respect.

The Kaufman flap began when she blogged that she was unhappy with her placement on Strikeforce Challengers 9. Kaufman (12-0) delivered a nice finishing slam to end things against Modafferi, but MMA Payout says the slam only backs its argument that female fighting is where it belongs.

If anything, the slam is further support for the idea that women lack much of the speed, strength, and damage threshold that make MMA so dynamic and exciting. The Kaufman slam pales in comparison to Rampage-Arona (or even Harris-Branch), which perfectly summarizes the difference between the two sports and why women’s MMA has such a tough row to hoe.

The slam has become a lightning rod for backers of female MMA and Kaufman. Fightlinker dished out its own slam calling MMA Payout's analysis "asinine" and that it didn't belong on a site analyzing the business side of MMA.

Fight Opinion wasn't happy with the prefight criticism Kaufman got for complaining about exposure:

She stated her demand to fight on Strikeforce main cards. Who came blame her? The fans didn’t.

Apparently the media, however, in large part is not happy with her attitude. Memo to those criticizing her with largely manufactured outrage — who else is going to promote her if the promotion she works for isn’t doing a good enough job promoting her or themselves?

FO says men do it all the time, so why can't Kaufman?

Let’s call it for what it is — Sarah did something that other fighters in the promotion have done (promoted themselves) and yet she gets heat for it while everyone else who goes into business for themselves in Strikeforce gets a shrug of the shoulders from beat writers. She doesn’t have a contract like Dan Henderson and making a living at a business that requires 100% devotion means you have to scratch and claw to get every dollar you can make. Whether that’s through sponsorships, commercials, fight salary, or whatever the revenue vehicle may be, she’s got to make a living.

Zach at FO thinks several bloggers ripped Kaufman because it made for a nice story during a slow news week.

So why the heat against Sarah by writers, which is a completely different reaction to the supportive response from fans? It’s a melting pot of reasons. First, it’s a dry news cycle. Writers are looking for material. Second, she’s a woman and there’s plenty of vocal fans who are not on the female MMA bandwagon.

If you read Cagewriter on a regular basis, for me the jury is still out on female MMA. I thought the Gina Carano-Cristiane "Cyborg" Santos fight was as good as any I'd seen during 2009. But that type of female fight is too often outnumbered by unathletic-looking clinchfests.

Fight Opinion is right, ultimately it's up to you guys. If you tune inon a regular basis, producing large viewership numbers, and female MMA helps to fill up arenas around the country, it's got a future. It's certainly a much better product than female boxing but so is the WNBA and for some reason men have consistently snubbed it.

Mike Kyle Makes a Case for a Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Title Fight

Mike Kyle Makes a Case for a Strikeforce Light Heavyweight Title Fight
by Michael David SmithIn a sign of how much Mike Kyle has done to resurrect his career -- and a sign of how shallow Strikeforce's light heavyweight division is -- Kyle is being discussed as a light heavyweight title contender after choking out Abongo Humphrey on Friday night's Strikeforce Challengers card.

Kyle and Humphrey engaged in some exciting if not particularly technically proficient striking first round, and then in the second round Kyle forced Humphrey to tap to a rear-naked choke, improving his record to 17-7-1. Afterward Strikeforce's television announcers suggested that the victory makes Kyle the No. 1 contender in the light heavyweight division.

I have had a few days away from climbing - in fact, my last session was 3 weekends ago at Froggatt - and so I got back to the gym this week. My local gym has an auto-belay setup so I was able to do some indoor routes without company.

And I struggled! Struggled to get up some new 6a and 6b routes that had gone up recently. There are 6c routes in there that I’ve done so I know it’s not their grading system.

It’s simply my lack of recent work on indoor or outdoor walls. My forearms got pumped way too soon and all-in-all it was a bit of a wash out. My recent excursions outside may have contributed too, as it’s nowhere near as motivating to climb indoor to the sound of banging chart house compared to topping out on a beautiful outdoor route.

So - this week will be a return to climbing in all its glory, and to refocus on my journey to 7a.

Yamaha is recalling certain 2009 Yamaha VMAX motorcycles for excessive electrical resistance in the ground wire from the accelerator position sensor (APS) and throttle position sensor (TPS). The issue, which affects 700 motorcycles, could cause the wrong signal to be sent to the bike’s ECU, resulting in an unstable idling speed, and in-turn an unsafe idling speed could precipitate a crash. The issue only affects VMAX’s built between June 2008 and March 2009.

Yamaha will notify owners whose bikes were made in this time frame, and begin a recall on July 28, 2010 (yesterday from this posts entry date). The recall will be done free of charge to VMAX owners. Any concerned owners may contact Yamaha at 1-800-962-7926, or visit the NHTSA’s website at safecar.gov.

FREE PRACTICE 3

Robert Kubica, R30-03, P9, 1:16.646, 20 laps
Vitaly Petrov, R30-04, P14, 1:17.148, 20 laps

QUALIFYING

Robert Kubica, R30-03, P7, 1:15.079

Robert: I am reasonably happy to be seventh on the grid and I think that, for now, we have to realise that we could not have qualified any higher than this. My lap could have been better, because I was held up by a Red Bull in the final sector, but I don't think it would have changed my position. We have had a couple of issues with the car here and in Silverstone, and I have not felt as confident with it, so we know that it's important to keep working to improve the feeling because that will give us more consistency. As for tomorrow's race, we saw in Silverstone that anything is possible but we need a good start and a good first lap. We hope that our race pace will be strong, too, but we saw today that the gap to the teams in front is pretty big so I'm expecting a tough afternoon.

Vitaly Petrov, R30-04, P13, 1:15.307

Vitaly: It was another tough qualifying session for me. The lap times around the top ten were very close and I was still learning how to get the most from the car and the tyres at this track, then trying to put it all together in a single lap. In the end, getting it right is a question of experience, and I know that better results will come when I can bring the pieces together – even though I wasn't far from the top ten today.

Eric Boullier, Team Principal
I am pretty pleased with our qualifying performance today, considering that all of the teams ahead of us – and some behind – are running with the F-duct. It's good to be the leading team without that system, and particularly nice to have Robert ahead of the two Mercedes – although he could have gone quicker had he not hit traffic on his fastest lap. Of course, our ambitions are greater than P7, but this was a good result today. On the other side of the garage, Vitaly didn't quite make the cut for Q3 – but in his defence, the times were very close today and he was just a few tenths away.

Alan Permane, Chief Race Engineer
At the moment, we know that we are a step away from the three teams ahead of us on the grid, so it's pleasing to see Robert qualify ahead of both Williams and both Mercedes. It was a shame that Vitaly wasn't able to get closer to the top ten, but he did a good job after two disjointed days of practice. It hasn't been the easiest of weekends for us overall, and it's fair to say we struggled with the car yesterday, but we got on top of the situation this morning and during qualifying. Looking to Sunday, the changeable weather conditions have been a feature of the weekend so far, but we are not currently expecting any rain for the race.

Even 'Big Nog' made it into 'The Expendables'

Even 'Big Nog' made it into 'The Expendables'

Sylvester Stallone definitely has respect for mixed martial artists. During this inside look at his new movie "The Expendables" he talks about trying to cast soldiers for the flick. While in Brazil he had trouble finding guys who looked the part so he hit an MMA gym headed up by former UFC and PRIDE heavyweight champ Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira. He found plenty of guys with cauliflower ears who didn't look like male models. Nogueira plays one of the soldiers (2:30 mark).

The movie also includes another former UFC champ in Randy Couture, in a much more prominent role along with former pro wrestler "Stone Cold" Steve Austin, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Jet Li, Terry Crews and Mickey Rourke.

Shields signs with UFC! Greeted by some with collective yawn

Shields signs with UFC! Greeted by some with collective yawn

A strange phenomenon occured last week with the signing of Jake Shields. After all the speculation and drama surrounding the possibility of the UFC stealing away Strikeforce's middleweight champ, the signing was greeted with skepticism and a ho-hum attitude from much of the MMA blogosphere. Yahoo! Sports' Dave Meltzer was even stronger:

Honestly, the less they show of him the better. You showcase people to their strengths and hide their weaknesses. You look at that for every person and then expose them accordingly. Either a guy with no sub defense and takedown defense, or hide him on the undercards where nobody can see him except the local ticket buyers, preferably on a Vegas show where nobody shows up until late. Having people sleep through Jon Fitch fights does less to make them want to see him against GSP again. However, if they never saw those fights, and marketed a 15 fight winning streak and had people talk him up, they wouldn't know enough to not want to see him.

Kid Nate from Bloody Elbow tried to take Meltzer to the woodshed:

I have to strongly disagree with Meltzer here. Shields has been in some not so great fights. But he's also been in plenty of good ones. Personally, I loved the (Jason) "Mayhem" (Miller) vs Shields match as a great grappling battle. It was just wildly inappropriate for prime time on CBS. On a UFC PPV, I think the fans could appreciate the skill and drama of two top grapplers battling, plus elbows are legal in the UFC and that will make Shields' game much more violent and entertaining.

Cagewriter tracked down Meltzer so he could elaborate on his take about Shields.

I'm pro-Shields to the UFC. He's a top 15 pound-for-pounder with a 15-fight win streak. He just manhandled a former UFC top three middleweight in Dan Henderson and his grappling is top notch. Just because his style can be plodding doesn't mean he's not marketable. How is he any different than some of the elite jiu-jitsu aces out of Brazil or better yet the hundreds of elite wrestlers around MMA? These are guys who generally possess rudimentary skills with their hands and if they don't get the fight to the ground, it can be a slopfest.

Because almost all of the elite stand-up fighters don't possess the necessary takedown defense to keep the champ at bay, it's pretty clear the sport is short on strikers dangerous enough at welterweight to challenge St. Pierre. Dan Hardy and Paul Daley are primarily strikers and very marketable. Frankly their shots in big fights were borderline dreadful to watch. So why not bring in a guy who can test GSP in the grappling department and see what happens? The sport is all about matchups. We're still very much in the infant stages of MMA and there simply aren't a lot of truly well-rounded fighters out there. If he can get by Martin Kampmann and maybe one other elite welterweight, Shields (25-4) deserves his shot at solving the GSP riddle.

White says boxing won't be around much longer

White says boxing won't be around much longer

Dana White often says how he's a big boxing fan. So it must pain him a little to give his opinion on the future of the sport. White's forecast is bleak.

"My honest opinion of boxing is that boxing will go away," White told ESPNRadio's Ryen Russillo. "I don't wish it any ill-will. It's not because the sport isn’t good or anything like that, it's just that it's so fragmented, and so many bad things have happened. Nobody is going to stick their hand in their own pocket and spend their own money to save the sport of boxing, nobody is going to do it."

He points to greed over the last 25 years.

"Done right the sport can be saved," said White. "Once everything went to a pay model, boxing stopped giving you good fights for free. As soon as that model ended your market starts to shrink when you're only on pay-per-view."

It doesn't help that boxing is now at a point where it can't even deliver the PPV quality fights 8-12 times a year.

"The best example right now is how long have fight fans wanted to see (Floyd) Mayweather versus (Manny) Pacquiao? Forever man. That's the fight I want to see," said White. "And it's not happening. These guys are getting offered crazy amounts of money and the fight just can't be made."

White, speaking before the latest round of the Mayweather-Pacquiao negotiations produced zilch, pointed out how difficult it is for boxing to compete with his product.

"Before this Mayweather-Pacquiao fight happens…lets’s say a miracle happens and they get this thing done this week – the fight will probably be sometime in November, right? I’ll have done ten fights, and, I don’t know, maybe out of the ten fights, four of them will be on free TV."

Make that closer to 16 fights with six or seven free cards now that the earliest we'll seePacman-Mayweather is May of 2011.

Russillo pulled a nice stunt at the end of the interview when he asked White if he knew of David Haye. Haye is one of the only chances boxing's heavyweight division has to win back some audience. The Brit is a skilled 224-pounder who'll be able to deliver big numbers with his mouth and is slick enough to make a fight against either Klitscko brother somewhat intriguing. White said he wasn't really aware of Haye. That's a casual boxing fan saying that. Not a good sign.

Strikeforce Challengers 9 on tap Friday night

Strikeforce Challengers 9 on tap Friday night

Two of the best in female MMA are on display Friday night in Everett, Wash., and on Showtime (11 p.m. ET/PT). Sarah Kaufman defends her 135-pound title against Roxanne Modafferi. Kaufman (11-0) is a slugger with eight stoppages on her record while Modafferi (15-5) will favor the fight getting to the ground. There was a little controversy this week when Kaufmann blogged that she didn't enjoy being the Strikeforce Challengers cards. She views this card as inferior to many of the regular Strikeforce cards that Showtime airs.

Sergio Non from USA Today broke down the fight:

Although she lacks one-punch knockout power, she can erupt with flurries to the head that often leave opponents reeling.

"I just think there's something very primal about it," Kaufman told USA TODAY in February before the Hashi fight. "It's so technical. There really are so many different facets to it."

Like Hashi and most of the other top-ranked female fighters, Modafferi (15-5) has a penchant for groundwork rather than boxing or kickboxing. Most of her victories saw her take down opponents before battering them on the mat or catching them with submission holds.

"I don't really like stand-up, to be honest," Modafferi says. "But it was my weak point, and I've worked really hard at it."

In the main event, it's a battle of heavyweights as Shane Del Rosario butts heads with Lolohea Mahe. Del Rosario has often been rumored as a future opponent for Bobby Lashley. Instead, Lashley is fighting Chad Griggs next month in Houston.

Torres will face off with Charlie Valencia, and the card will be headlined with Jose Aldo fighting Manny Gamburyan in a title bout. So don't fret, Miguel. You'll be able to buy a shirt on September 30.

If you are hoping to improve your ability or learn more about training techniques and tools, then this blog will give you some of the answers - because that’s what I’m going to do too!

I’ve been climbing for about three years and have developed enough basic ability to get me up 6a routes. I’ve set myself a target of improving the level I climb at but I quickly hit a glass ceiling of ability: I tried to get up routes graded 6B and don’t have the extra strength or technique (or more likely both) to reach the top. The only way to improve seemed to be to fail on the routes I wanted to climb. This quickly got boring for me so I set about some research.

I found lots of advice online, with phrases like ‘contact strength’ and ‘body tension’. These are new concepts that I’m going to have to learn about.

One important lesson came quickly: If I want to be a better climber then training can help.

This blog will chart my journey from Joe Average 6a to my target of 7a onsight - and beyond!

UFC 117 Fight of the Night bonus off the table after this scrap

The UFC is hitting Oakland in August. Why you ask? It's a town of fighters. Ever sit in the "Black Hole" at an Oakland Raider game wearing a Chargers' jersey? Then you know what we're talking about.

On Aug. 7, Oracle Arena will host 11 great UFC fights but now the pressure is on. Who can earn the UFC's bonus after what just went down in this brou-ha-ha in Oaktown?

Who can top this female MMA streetfight for excitement? It had everything. Both ladies are wearing traditional fighting trunks. They seem well-rounded. There's a few thai clinches employed along with slick boxing, knees and a bevy of kicks. Enjoy the full video, but it's very NSFW.

It would be tremendous if Dana White showed this to his fighters during his "put on a great show speech" right after the UFC 117 weigh-ins.

The video already has 52,000 views. Who wants to bet it outperforms Impact FC by at least 400,000 when all is said and done?

One serious point, let's hope Bay Area news stations play the heck out of this thing in an effort to catch the dirtball who slugged the woman and dropped her (7:05 mark). Deadspin has a full breakdown of the background on this brawl.

Canseco loses fight against 60-year-old

Canseco loses fight against 60-year-old

It was another embarrassing fighting exhibition for Jose Canseco. Or was it? Canseco agreed to travel to Arkansas to take on 60-year-old Gary Hogan in a boxing match. The former major league slugger plodded his way through four rounds and lost a 39-37 decision to Hogan, an associate athletic director at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock. "Rock 'em Sock 'em Rumble by the River" went down at Dickey-Stephens Park before the Arkansas Travelers-Midland Rockhounds Double-A baseball game.

It looks like the snitch that sports fans love to hate showed a little heart. Frankly, it didn't look like Canseco, 46, was really trying. Although in the prefight and postfight, Hogan broke down the fight like it was real.

"He did [throw his heavy artillery at me]," said Hogan. "I took some shots but the bottom line is, I'm used to taking shots. I felt good in there. I wasn't tired, my conditioning was unbelievable. I thought he got tired there in the third and fourth rounds."

Hogan came in at 191 pounds while Canseco was 240. The fight was put together to benefit Ray Rodgers' boxing gym and GED program in Little Rock.

"It's an exhibition. I had a great time. I've gotta a lot of respect for Gary. Just coming out here and fighting a guy 15 years his junior, he's got some [guts]."

Canseco was paid for the fight.

Canseco is still seeking an MMA fight against former Heisman Trophy winner Herschel Walker. He made a big push a few months back and even spent time at a renowned Northern California MMA gym. But all of his calling out and self-promotion did nothing to convince Walker or the promotion he fights for, Strikeforce, to make the fight.

A very eloquent Diaz responds to Miller's critique

A very eloquent Diaz responds to Miller's critique

The hype has begun for a possible Nick Diaz-Jason Miller fight. Diaz is already 1-0 against "Mayhem" via technicality. Miller lost a handicap match during the CBS brawl as Diaz spearheaded a 7-on-1 melee. Apparently Diaz watched a teaser for HDNet's upcoming interview with Miller where he was blamed for the brawl and decided to tape a video response while driving. This one's a doozy. Diaz rambles for five minutes, used the f-bomb in some fashion 29 times and we're still not sure what the message was (NSFW).

We think Diaz called Miller a phony who's moreconcerned withhis image than fighting.

"Look at you mother[expletive], you've got gold teeth and funny hair," said Diaz. "I don't know why you want to live your life like that. Whatever dude."

Update - In what appears to be a shocking development, someone may have talked some sense into Diaz possibly telling him his rant was a bit juvenile. The video has been changed from public to private.

Diaz is taking Miller's challenge head-on.

"I don't think you can make the weight anyway," said Diaz. "Why don't you come down to 170? You can't make weight at 170, so why are you talking [expletive]?"

The best part comes towards the close (3:44 mark) when Diaz says, "It's whatever. How? Why? You know. What the [expletive]?"

Barnett, Parisyan, Soko pick up wins down under at Impact

UFC veterans Josh Barnett, Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou and Karo Parisyan all walked away with much-needed wins from Impact FC fights in Brisbane, Australia today.

Barnett, who had promised to "anally rape" Geronimo Dos Santos, thankfully didn't follow through on that plan. Instead, he overcame the much larger Dos Santos with takedowns and ground and pound, winning by TKO in the first round.

Sokoudjou's last bout was a win due to disqualification over Dave Herman, but before that, he was TKOed by both Ikuhisa "Minowaman" Minowa in DREAM and Gegard Mousasi in Strikeforce. At Impact, Soko was the one on the winning side, quickly pounding out Joakim Ferreira. Sokoudjou's 80-second win doesn't quell any fears about his lack of conditioning, but a win will help get him back on track.

Speaking of fighters who needed to get back on track, Karo Parisyan won with a rear naked choke over Ben Mortimer in the second round. He returned to his judo roots, throwing Mortimer to the ground several times before finishing with the RNC.

This was Parisyan's first bout since fighting Dong Hyun Kim at UFC 94. Parisyan tested positive for painkillers after that bout. Then, when Parisyan was scheduled to fight Dustin Hazelett at UFC 106 in November of 2009, he pulled out the day before weigh-ins. That move put Parisyan on Dana White and the UFC's bad side.

Parisyan, who has battled anxiety problems for much of his career, needed a win to move on from his rough 2009 and show he still wanted to fight. According to Sherdog reporter Jordan Breen, who was on-site for the fights, Parisyan looked relieved when the fight was over.

Retirement for Georges St. Pierre? Sure, why not?

Retirement for Georges St. Pierre? Sure, why not?

UFC welterweight champ Georges St. Pierre is No. 2 in Yahoo! Sports' pound-for-pound rankings. For a man who is driven to be the best, being No. 2 to anyone, even Anderson Silva, is not OK. GSP wants to be the undisputed best mixed martial artist on the planet. He's willing to fight for that title.

And if he wins it, what's next? According to him, retirement.

Still, if St-Pierre takes "a couple" of welterweight fights in the next year or two, and if Silva is still the pound-for-pound king at that point, the French-Canadian then would consider moving up to fight him. And if he defeats Silva, that's a win worthy of retirement, he said.

"If one day I fight at 185 pounds for a superfight to know who is the best pound-for-pound in the world, (and) if I reach my goal, then my goal will be reached," St-Pierre said. "There will be no point for me to still compete because I'm not going to have a goal left."

Josh Koscheck is his next opponent, as the two will fight after the upcoming season of "The Ultimate Fighter" airs. Assuming that he wins that, he will likely face the winner of Thiago Alves and Jon Fitch. GSP has already beaten all three of those fighters.

Assuming that Silva keeps his belt after fighting Chael Sonnen in August and that Silva stays at middleweight, the logical step for both fighters would be to face each other, but with a win over Silva, should a fighter like GSP retire?

In a word: yes. Between his endorsements, sponsorships and fight purses, GSP has more than enough money to live well. He's a smart, eloquent man who can find plenty of work in commentating and representing MMA in his home country of Canada.

But beyond concerns about GSP's financial security, without a real challenge, why would he keep fighting? He has cleaned out the division. He beat the king of the UFC's welterweight division, Matt Hughes, twice. Both times that he faced B.J. Penn, GSP won. Now, he has to fight welterweights that he has already defeated.

He is young — just 29 years old — but without a real challenger on the horizon, why should he keep fighting? It would be better to see a champion like GSP go out on his own terms than hold on for too long, and get knocked out three times in a row.

Tito in no-win situation against Hamill

Tito in no-win situation against Hamill

Tito Ortiz just signed his contract to meet former protege Matt Hamill in October. While doing so, he didn'texactly seem chipper in this video. Ortiz worked a lot with Hamill during Season 3 of "The Ultimate Fighter" to the point where the rest of castmates got angry with the MMA prospect. Hamill also worked Ortiz after the show. Four years later, the UFC is throwing teacher and student together into the Octagon.

"It sucks, but this is business.I had another friend who was close to me and ended up losing a friendship," said Ortiz referencing Chuck Liddell. "So I come to realize that anyone at 205 can't be my friend."

That's probably not disappointing news to most of the light heavyweight class, who would alllove the attention coming from a fight andvictory over Ortiz. Hamill, who is the only deaf fighter in the UFC, is a difficult guy to smash and get riled up via trash talk. Theonly person to attempt it was Michael Bisping. He's nowgot a hate-hate relationship with the majority of MMA fans.

Cage Potato says Ortiz is a good-sized underdogat offshore sports books. A check with Las Vegas sportsbooks indicate that Hamill will likely be around minus-150. That's a real indication of how far Ortiz has fallen. Hamill is 8-2 in the UFC but his top victoriescame against Mark Munoz (now at middleweight)and Keith Jardine. He also has a DQ victory over Jon Jones but was getting destroyed in that fight.

Ortiz (15-7) hasn't won a fight since 2006 and is still recovering from serious back and neck surgery the last two years.Hamill is essentially a younger version of Ortiz. Both have gas-tank issues, but it doesn't appear Ortiz has the athleticism anymore to stay off the mat against Hamill, who is an excellent takedown artist. They meet Oct. 23 at UFC 121 in Anaheim.

WEC Hometown race heats up; Phoenix, Milwaukee in the lead

WEC Hometown race heats up; Phoenix, Milwaukee in the lead

In spring, the WEC announced a contest with Amp Energy to bring the fights to your hometown, and the deadline is soon approaching with Phoenix leading and Milwaukee in second place.

WEC champs Ben Henderson and Dominick Cruz are both originally from Arizona and have been campaigning for Phoenix, while Duke Roufus' camp -- with WEC fighter Anthony Pettis -- has been pushing hard for Milwaukee.

The WEC has been happy with the way the contest has turned out.

“As the deadline approaches, it will be interesting to see which city gets a WEC event in December,” WEC GM Reed Harris said. “This is truly unique in that fans have all of the control. The fans in Phoenix have surged out of the gate and taken the lead. But with only a few days left, cities such as Milwaukee, Chicago, Atlanta, Nashville, Philadelphia, Sacramento and others aren’t going down without a fight.”

Who would you rather see get it? The hot, unforgiving desert of Phoenix or Milwaukee, the land of beer and cheese? You can vote here.

Retirement, Iceman-style: Chuck Liddell golfs a little differently

Retirement, Iceman-style: Chuck Liddell golfs a little differently

Chuck Liddell still hasn't decided if he's retiring or not, but he has already taken up the hobby of retirees: golf. However, he still is Chuck Liddell. A man with a mohawk and head tattoos is not going to put on a pair of plaid pants and head to the country club.

Liddell took part in Minnesota Viking Jared Allen's Night Ops Golf Tournament that benefited Homes for Wounded Warriors. The tournament started late in the afternoon so that the back nine took place at night, in pitch dark. In true military style, the tournament featured "punishments" for making bad shots.

The participants had to endure harassment from Marines on every hole - distracting them on their backswings, and frequently demanding push-ups for sub-par results. Some duffers received different consequences - UFC star Chuck "Iceman" Liddell had to blast through a Slip-and-Slide after failing to reach the green in regulation on the 14th hole.

Liddell and the other golfers, including MMA enthusiast and NFL reporter Jay Glazer, used glow-in-the-dark golf balls and tees to find their way around. All of this craziness on the links was for a good cause, though, as the proceeds from the outing went to help build handicap-accessible homes for injured military members.

Munoz looking to turn the corner and get rid of the junker

Munoz looking to turn the corner and get rid of the junker

There's going to be some competition for the fight-night bonuses at UFC on Versus 2. Tuesday, we told you about John Howard and his 1994 Honda Accord. Wednesday, it's Mark Munoz and his 1992 Honda Accord. It proves two things, Hondas last and the crew of contenders on this card are still climbing the ladder to riches.

Munoz, a former All-American wrestler at Oklahoma State, was having trouble supporting his wife and four kids. That's while he was the wrestling coach at UC Davis. So he decided to get into prize fighting and mixed martial arts.

"There were times where I couldn't even provide for my family," Munoz told the Orange County Register. "I accumulated much debt. The car got repossessed. The house foreclosed."

Munoz (8-1) seems to be on the right track now as he preps to face Yushin Okami (24-5, 8-2 UFC). He's entering his fifth fight in the UFC and owns his own gym, Reign in Lake Forest, Calif. But his frugal ways continue, he still has that old Honda.

He also trains a lot with Blackhouse MMA, the famed Southern California gym that houses Anderson Silva, Junior Dos Santos, Lyoto Machida and the Nogueira Brothers. Munoz has served as a stand-in for Chael Sonnen as Silva preps to defend his title next weekend at UFC 117. Silva also has a win over Okami on his ledger. Munoz said viaExaminer.com:

"Anderson actually told me that after sparring with me, and after fighting Okami, Yushin has nothing for me.He knows what Okami has, so we've been working really hard to understand how he moves and how to counter back. He's got a lot of great stuff that he's showing me."

Okami was once considered one of the top-five middleweights in the UFC. He's a solid ground and pound fighter but his takedown defense was a big issue two fights ago against Sonnen. That would seem to play right into Munoz's hands. Okami did show a more dangerous standup game in his last fight against Lucio Linhares.

Rear-naked choke makes it a tough week for little fatties

Rear-naked choke makes it a tough week for little fatties

The rear-naked choke should be treated like a fighter's lethal weapon. Matt Hughes learned his lesson years ago when a crooked cop tried to sue the former UFC champ after he asked him to apply the hold.

This week it was Randy Couture and Alan Belcher showing off their technique. Couture took one second to get the submission on the meaty-breasted Jim Norton from the Opie and Anthony Show. Meanwhile, Belcher couldn't get the tap from his infant daughter.

Pellegrino gets revenge for all fighters in New Jersey local ad

Kurt Pellegrino's last fight -- a loss to George Sotiropoulos -- didn't go as planned. However, he does have something to fall back on: ACTING! Check him out as he stars in a commercial with veteran referee Dan Miragliotta.

Pellegrino had the chance to exert revenge on Miragliotta on behalf of every fighter who has ever been on the losing end of a bad call by the ref. Somewhere, James Thompson is smiling.

Thanks to Danny Rubenstein for the heads up.

Mousasi and Mizuno with submission wins at DREAM.15

Mousasi and Mizuno with submission wins at DREAM.15

Gegard Mousasi rebounded from his Strikeforce loss to "King Mo" Lawal with a quick submission over Jake O'Brien in the opening round of the DREAM light heavyweight grand prix in Japan. O'Brien, a collegiate wrestler at Purdue University, shot in on Mousasi, who caught him in a standing guillotine. O'Brien went limp at 0:31 in the first round, and the referee called the end of the fight.

O'Brien came into the fight nearly 20 pounds overweight, so the fight was caught at a catchweight, and O'Brien forfeited 10 percent of his purse to Mousasi.

Manhoef still has no ground game

Melvin Manhoef is a striker without a ground game, and that fact lost him a bout at DREAM.15. Tatsuya Mizuno won with a Kimura in the first round. Manhoef knocked Mizuno to the ground early, but couldn't finish the fight, and found himself in trouble as the fight went to the ground. Mizuno pushed Manhoef through the ropes, then pulled his arm to complete the bout at 7:38 in the first round.

This is Manhoef's second loss in a row, as he was knocked out by Robbie Lawler in December at Strikeforce.

Light heavyweight politics puts a damper on UFC 119

Light heavyweight politics puts a damper on UFC 119

The Nogueira brothers headline UFC 119 in Indianapolis. Antonio Rodrigo will rematch against Frank Mir while Antonio Rogerio will battle light heavyweight prospect Ryan Bader. It's a solid start to the card but we're left thinking what could've been. The UFC has a ton of fight cards to close out 2010 but it's being hamstrung by fighter's wishes at 205 pounds. The best fights aren't being made according to Yahoo! Sports' Dave Meltzer in his Wrestling Observer newsletter:

The original idea for this show was to headline with Lyoto Machida vs. Quinton Jackson and Antonio Rogerio Nogueira vs. Rashad Evans, but both Jackson and Evans turned down the fight.

According to Meltzer, Team Machida wants Evans for an interim title shot. That could set up a unification bout when the UFC light heavyweight champ Mauricio Rua returns form another knee surgery. Rua is sidelined for a minimum of eight more months. And Jackson wanted to fight "Lil' Nog." This notion that Evans will sit on the sidelines for nearly 10 months is getting more preposterous by the day.

All-Star break! MMA's 2010 first half award winners

All-Star break! MMA's 2010 first half award winners

On the slowest sports day of the year we look ahead to the second half of 2010. Baseball writers have laid out their first-half award winners, so let's fire away with mixed martial arts' highs and lows from the first half of 2010.

Fighter of the Year

This isn't necessarily an MVP award and doesn't have to be a champion. FOY candidates come in all shapes and sizes. It can be someone who revitalized their career, shocked the world or simply put themselves top of mind for most fight fans.

1. Brock Lesnar
The UFC heavyweight champ's win over Shane Carwin showed he still has a ways to go. But the way he did it at UFC 116 changed many folks' opinion of the loudmouth former pro wrestler. Lesnar won back a lot of fans by the way he handled himself in and out of the cage. He showed unreal moxie by surviving the onslaught from the mammoth Carwin in the first and some creativity with the way he finished the matchvia arm-triangle choke.

Lesnar, who battled a life-altering stomach ailment at the end of 2009, showed a renewed attitude with the media and towards his opponent before the fight. He was also incredibly respectful and humble following the win.

2. Chael Sonnen
Sonnen is now the middleweight version of Lesnar. He busted down the door to a title shot by throwing Nate Marquardt around the Octagon at UFC 109. Then the former republican political candidate from Oregon went on a verbal rampage stoking the fire for his fight against Anderson Silva, who isn't exactly a fan favorite right now. It's set up a great scenario for fans who get to root for which fighter they dislike the most.

3. Alistair Overeem
Fighting mostly in Japan, Overeem was opening some eyes with his dominance and the fact that he had grown from a sleek light heavyweight to a striking monster at 253 pounds. But the question loomed — was it natural? Overeem came to the U.S. in April and destroyed Brett Rogers, something Fedor Emelianenko had much more difficulty doing. Most importantly, Overeem was clean. Now he's the non-UFC heavyweight fans are calling for to get a shot at the big league's elite.

4. Jon Jones
Jones burst onto the scene in 2009 and his performances have made it hard for the UFC to find fights for him. The promotion doesn't want to move him to quickly but it's clear after literally breaking Brandon Vera's face at UFC on Versus 1 in Denver, they have to fast track the 22-year-old. Next up is Vladimir Matyushenko on Aug. 1. After that, who can argue against Jones being in the mix with the likes of Lyoto Machida, Quinton Jackson, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira and Rashad Evans?

5. Chris Leben
Leben isn't beating the cream of the crop at middleweight but the feat of two wins in 14 days is sick. He was also bouncing back from one of the lowest points of his career at the backend of 2009 when he was put to sleep by Jake Rosholt, who isn't even with the UFC anymore. "The Crippler" has now put himself in line for a fight against a top middleweight, that's something no analyst or fans, would've been clamoring for a year ago.

Others: Court McGee, Roy Nelson, Mauricio Rua, Gilbert Melendez, Fabricio Werdum

Breakout Fighters of the Year

1. Frank Edgar
"The Answer" was already established as a top-5 fighter at 155 pounds but few thought he had a chance to beat B.J. Penn. After his loss to Georges St. Pierre, Penn appeared to be an unsolvable riddle at lightweight. Edgar's gameplan at UFC 113 was brilliant in taking out Penn and now many pundits have him on the top-10 pound-for-pound list.

2. Mo Lawal
After making the transition from high-level amateur wrestler, Lawal is only five fights into his MMA career. He's made a mark with his mouth and his skills in the cage. Lawal took out one of the hottest young fighters in the game in Gegard Mousasi. A few more dominant wins and people will be clamoring for him to test himself in the talent-rich 205 division in the UFC.

3. Evan Dunham
Boy, he doesn't look the part of the badass, but Dunham has a pretty good nasty streak and a well-rounded game. There are tons of promising lightweights in their 20s and Dunham pushed right towards to the top of the list by completely frustrating Tyson Griffin, who had only lost to Edgar and Sean Sherk, coming into their fight at UFC 116. Dunham vaults all the way up to face Sherk at UFC 119 in September.

4. Ross Pearson
Pearson, 25, has opened some eyes after what was an odd run to the Season 9 title on "The Ultimate Fighter." Not many fans thought there was a real prospect coming off the show but Pearson shut up the critics by brutalizing Denis Siver. Up next, he gets Cole Miller in September.

5. Brendan Schaub
I guess Roy Nelson is really, really good. Schaub had a tough time with the big-bellied one at the TUF 10 Finale, but he responded by storming through his first two opponents since. And the 6-foot-4, 240-pounder did it the way people love to see heavyweights doling out their beatings, via the knockout. Schaub showed heavy hands and a killer instinct in destroying to bulky wrestlers in Chris Tuchsherer and Chase Gormely.

Others: Gerald Harris, Ryan Bader, Luke Rockhold, Ben Askren

Most Disappointing Fighters

1. Diego Sanchez
The move to 170 pounds proved to be a disaster. Sanchez panicked a bit after he lost badly to Penn at UFC 107. He moved back from 155 and he looked tiny and out of shape in a loss to John Hathaway. Sanchez needs to go back down to lightweight, sharpen up his skill set and most importantly, come in with better gameplans.

2. Frank Mir
A third Mir-Lesnar fights had fans salivating until they saw the stratergy Mir came up with for his interim UFC heavyweight title fight against Shane Carwin. Mir, who was overpowered by Lesnar in their second fight chose to lock horns in a clinch battle on the cage against Carwin too. He was mauled and is now fighting a crisis of confidence. Mir is certainly still a top-10 heavyweight but he needs fight down in the 250s and be a thinking big man.

3. Paul Daley
The fall came quicker than the ascent for Daley. The British sluggest stormed his way towards a UFC welterweight title shot by getting a fight against Josh Koscheck. Fifteen minutes and 30 seconds later he was looking for a job. Daley's lack of takedown defense was alarming, but his actions after the fight were just plain stupid. He slugged Koscheck just second after the bell prompting UFC president Dana White to cut him from the roster immediately and state that he'll never fight in the UFC again.

4. Takanori Gomi
Once considered the top lightweight in the world, lack of dedication and hard work caught up with Gomi. He's only 31 but Gomi's battling the fact that he hasn't added to his game much over the years. Gomi looked tentative in his first UFC fight against Kenny Florian. He needs a bang-up performance against Tyson Griffin in two weeks to stick around.

5. Marius Zaromskis
So much for that shocking victory at DREAM's 2009 Welterweight Grand Prix. Zaromskis showed off solid takedown defense and vicious head-kick KO power in storming to the victories in Japan. Once he came stateside to face Nick Diaz and Evangelista Santos, he was uncovered as a bit of sham. Head movement! Zaromskis was a punching bag in both of Strikeforce matchups.

Others: Dan Lauzon, Rolles Gracie, Phillipe Nover, Joachim Hansen

Fighters who put their career on life support

1. Kimbo Slice

We didn't know Kimbo's fight against Matt Mitrione was a make or break fight but it was. Kimbo couldn't check leg kicks and lost badly to a guy with one professional fight. The UFC thought the sizzle was gone and now we're in a waiting pattern on Kimbo. Strikeforce has repeatedly said its not interested. You'd think the former YouTube brawler would have Japan clamoring for his services but nothing has come down yet. Now there's rumors of a ridiculous fight against World's Strongest Man freak Mariusz Pudzianowski.

2. Andrei Arlovski

Arlovski, 31, admitted before his lackluster loss to Antonio Silva that he'd worked with a sports psychiatrist. He needs more sessions. Arlovski's experimenting with a boxing career has completely screwed him mentally in the cage during MMA fights. He's too calculated now. Where did the killer instinct go? He better get it back soon or he's destined to be a card filled in Japan.

3. Mark Coleman

The UFC and PRIDE legend tried to reinvent himself by training smarter and harder, but there's only so much you can get out of the body at age 45. Coleman gassed quickly and broke mentally in his fight against fellow veteran Randy Couture. The performance was so bad, that in spite of Coleman fighting in a UFC main event, the promotion dumped him. There really isn't much more he can do beyond hit the minor league for a few more paydays. Let's hope he stays healthy and avoid any serious damage.

4. Paul Buentello

Buentello got a second chance at the big time when he returned to the UFC, but he just couldn't pull the trigger against Cheick Kongo. Buentello has never been in premium shape and it costs him against the Frenchman, who took him down at will at UFC on Versus 1.

5. Frank Trigg

Trigg, 38, is ready for the announcer's booth. He's one of the best and getting better. He's ready for the next phase in his life and Matt Serra made sure of it that by scoring a nasty knockout win at UFC 109.
