Aoki breaking bones and still angry

Aoki breaking bones and still angry

Shinya Aoki is still a man to be feared. MMA's most notorious bone breaker was at it again this weekend. Fresh off an embarrassing performance against Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez in the United States back in April, Aoki took on Japan's No. 2 lightweight and smashed him. The 27-year-old submission specialist latched onto Tatsuya Kawajiri in the first 15 seconds of the fight and began to work a heel hook achilles lock. Aoki has no problem finishing holds, even if he snaps to snap a limb.

"When I caught (Kawajiri) and tried to submit him, I heard a loud crackle sound. He did not tap so I thought ‘Ok, this match just became a death-fight’ and I was going to destroy his leg," Aoki told SportsNavi. "I knew Kawajiri never taps so I could not win without breaking his bone. I was hoping for an open-fracture. No one could have endured [that submission] like Kawajiri. His heart is iron."

Aoki, who was openly weeping in the locker room following his loss to Melendez, is still reeling from that defeat.

"After I lost (to Gilbert Melendez), many people blamed me, but [my fiance] helped me through it all," said Aoki, who announced his engagement in the ring following his win. "The people who mocked me in my fight versus Melendez, I wanted to kill them all. Even in this fight, too many people said ‘Kawajiri would win!’. I felt like telling these people ‘Go to hell!’."

There were rumors of Melendez-Aoki II in the Japan during the fall. MMAWeekly reported earlier today that's not likely.

This was the second broken bone courtesy of Aoki in the last seven months. He snapped Mizuto Hirota's arm to end 2009.
