Cro Cop taps out Barry, lobbies for bonus at UFC 115

Cro Cop taps out Barry, lobbies for bonus at UFC 115

No matter if you thought Pat Barry or Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipovic would win their UFC 115 bout, you likely didn't expect it to end in a submission. Except, that's exactly what happened. Filipovic won by rear naked choke at 4:30 in the third round over Barry.

Barry knocked Cro Cop down early in the first round, which boosted his confidence. Barry knocked him down again with the same right hand later in the first round. That second punch caused Cro Cop's face to swell early. At one point, Cro Cop, a former K-1 kickboxer, tried to take down Barry, also a kickboxer. The attempt was unsuccessful, and the two burst into giggles and hugged, laughing at their brief foray to ground fighting.

Cro Cop didn't back down in the second round, coming out with his well-known left kick. He threw it twice and then followed up with a flurry of punches. Barry slipped and fell on a kick attempt. Cro Cop took advantage and kept Barry on the ground. Cro Cop took full mount for a moment before Barry turned over and gave up his back. At that point, Cro Cop tried, unsuccessfully, to sink in a rear naked choke before the round ended.

The fight seemed tied going into the third round, but Cro Cop quickly removed all doubt who was the better fighter. Filipovic knocked Barry down with a series of punches. He then pushed Barry's head back against the cage and landed blow after blow. Finally, Cro Cop saw the opportunity to end the bout and sunk a vicious rear naked choke, causing Barry to tap.

Afterwards, the two embraced. Barry is a longtime fan of Filipovic's, and spoke often of how excited he was to fight his idol. However, Barry showed that to beat a legend like Cro Cop, he'll need to improve his all-around game.

A smiling Filipovic addressed the Vancouver crowd, many of them waving Croatian flags, in Croatian. He then turned towards UFC president.

"I hope Dana White is not too stingy," Filipovic said. "I want that submission of the night bonus, and maybe fight of the night, too?"

UPDATE: According to Joe Rogan at the end of the pay-per-view broadcast, Filipovic did win the submission of the night bonus.
