The weekend's Three Stars: Hominick, Grispi and McGee

The weekend's Three Stars: Hominick, Grispi and McGee

With a double dose of MMA in the books, Cagewriter takes a look at the three fighters who distinguished themselves during "The Ultimate Fighter" finale Saturday and WEC 49 on Sunday.

No. 1 star — Mark Hominick: A Canadian who trains in Montreal with Georges St. Pierre and Kenny Florian with Sam Stout and Chris Horodecki, Hominick was determined to put on a show for the Edmonton crowd at WEC 49. Along with fellow Canadian Yves Jabouin, Hominick did that with a back-and-forth battle in which neither fighter slowed until Homick TKOed Jabouin in the second round. They earned the $10,000 Fight of the Night bonus for their efforts.

No. 2 star — Josh Grispi: His nickname is the Fluke, but at WEC 49, Grispi showed that he's anything but. After not fighting for more than a year, he quickly submitted L.C. Davis with a guillotine, putting a very tough Davis to sleep in the first round of their bout. Grispi also walked away richer from his bout, earning the $10,000 Submission of the Night.

No. 3 star — Court McGee: On the lackluster TUF finale card, McGee stood out in winning season 11 of the reality TV show and earning a UFC contract. He used superior wrestling and clinch skills to take out Kris McCray. McGee finished with a rear naked choke that earned him $25,000 for the Submission of the Night.

Honorable mention — Matt Hamill, who fought through a broken hand to beat Keith Jardine at the TUF finale and Eddie Wineland, who knocked out Will Campuzano at WEC 49 with a body shot. Both fighters earned bonuses; Hamill $25,000 for Fight of the Night and Wineland $10,000 for Knockout of the Night.

Dishonorable mention —Jamie Yager, who quit between rounds during the filming of TUF and then again quitin his bout with Richie Attonito; and Kamal Shalorus, for continually battering Jamie Varner's crotch with missed inside kicks.
