You can already hear the profanities spewing forth. Dana White will flip out when he hears that Jon Fitch is sticking by his stance that he'll never fight American Kickboxing Academy teammate Josh Koscheck. Fitch told Sportsnet in Canada that if Koscheck defeats Georges St-Pierre at the end of 2010 and defends his title after that, he'll move out of the division and up to middleweight.
"To me there's no reason to fight a teammate. It's not a fight we're interested in, at all," said Fitch.
Good for Fitch if he feels that strongly. He's solidified himself as a top-3 welterweight behind GSP and a move to middleweight, where many of the fighters walk around between 205 and 215 pounds, is a huge risk.
Fitch threw a little water on the firestorm by suggesting that the move isn't going to happen anytime soon and it only happens if what he called, "a tall order" is completed. That's Koscheck pulling the upset on St-Pierre and probably having to beat GSP a second time.
Fitch went toe-to-toe with White during the postfight press conference after UFC 111. The AKA fighter said he wanted another shot at St-Pierre. He was asked what he would do if he had to go through Koscheck to get the shot. Fitch joked that they would only fight at the gym behind closed doors.
"I guess he doesn't want the title shot that badly," said White. "We're all friends and [expletive]. Like Jon said 'I want that title so bad.' Really? How bad do you want it?
"There's no reason two guys can't go out and compete against each other to see who's better. It's over man, this whole 'we don't want to fight each other thing.' How long can it go on when you've got two top guys in the same division and they won't fight each other?"
Apparently not much longer. If Koscheck wins the welterweight title and can hold on to it through the middle of 2011, Fitch will be fighting at 185.
